Chapter 5 - THE FIRST DATE WAS A LIE

I remembered everything.
Julian spilling champagne near my dress.
His embarrassed smile.
Coffee afterward.
Three-hour conversation.
He knew favorite author.
Favorite restaurant.
That my mother died when I was sixteen.
I thought we connected.
Now I knew Evelyn had researched me.
Social media.
Charity biographies.
Public interviews with Dad.
Julian arrived prepared.
But something complicated emerged.
Messages between Julian and Evelyn from early relationship.
Evelyn:
Keep her interested.
Julian:
Stop treating her like a transaction.
Then later:
I actually like her.
Evelyn:
Even better.
I stared at that line.
Did Julian love me?
Maybe.
That didn’t save him.
People sometimes begin relationship for wrong reasons and develop real feelings.
Then still choose betrayal.
Julian had opportunities to stop.
He didn’t.
Instead he proposed after I believed Dad died.
Then phone manipulation.
Isolation.
Marriage.
Envelope.
Violence.
Each step was choice.
Then police located Julian’s abandoned car.
Inside:
My envelope.
Unopened?
No.
Seal broken.
Documents intact.
Why leave it?
Because once he discovered trust amendment, it was worthless to him.
But one item was missing.
A handwritten note from Dad.
Personal.
Not financial.
Dad looked troubled.
“What did it say?”
He hesitated.
Then:
“If you are reading this after marrying Julian Vance, ask him what happened at Lake Mercer.”
I stared.
“What happened at Lake Mercer?”
Dad said:
“I don’t know.”
That was why note existed.
Weeks before Switzerland, an anonymous source told Dad to investigate property there.
Property connected to Vance Development.
Dad never got chance.
Julian had taken only the one piece of paper pointing toward it.

Whatever frightened him wasn’t the trust anymore.
It was Lake Mercer.
