Chapter 7 - JULIAN CAME BACK

He surrendered forty-eight hours later.
Attorney beside him.
No dramatic chase.
No shootout.
He looked exhausted.
I watched interview only through information later shared appropriately.
Julian admitted assaulting me.
Not full justification.
He claimed panic.
Rage.
Alcohol.
None excused it.
Then he admitted phone interference.
But claimed Evelyn ordered it.
Investigators asked:
“Did she hold your hand while you installed software?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to block Charles?”
“No.”
“Did she force you to tell Sophia her father was dead?”
Silence.
“No.”
Good.
Responsibility.
Then Julian claimed Dad’s “death” idea came from Evelyn.
Evidence partly supported that.
Evelyn found reports of unrelated aircraft accident overseas.
Suggested they could exploit confusion.
Julian fabricated details.
Together.
Then Julian said something I didn’t expect.
“I never wanted Sophia hurt.”
Investigator reportedly stared at him.
“You sprayed industrial disinfectant into her eyes.”
Julian broke down.
There are statements so absurd that hearing them aloud destroys self-deception.
Then he asked to speak with me.
I refused.
He wrote letter.
I didn’t read it.
Not yet.
Then evidence from Lake Mercer surfaced.
Melissa led investigators to hidden records.
They documented financing deception.
Keller cooperated.
Evelyn’s role became clearer.
Then investigators found a second folder.
Marked:
S. STERLING.
Inside were photographs of me taken before I ever met Julian.
Coffee shop.
Charity event.
Gym.
My apartment building.
Not Julian’s handwriting.
Evelyn’s assistant had compiled them.
My future mother-in-law had selected me before her son ever said hello.
Then one photograph showed something that made Dad go silent.
I was standing beside my mother’s grave.
Date:
Three years earlier.
On edge of photograph stood another figure.
May you like
Evelyn.
She had been watching me long before Julian entered my life.
