Chapter 4 - THE TRUST

Dad didn’t lie.
“Yes. I changed it.”
“Why?”
“Because I became suspicious.”
“Of Julian?”
“Yes.”
Three weeks before wedding, Dad instructed trustees to suspend the provision that would have transferred temporary voting authority to me.
Not because he distrusted me.
Because he suspected someone was manipulating me.
He didn’t know how deeply.
Julian apparently discovered change.
That explained wedding-night rage.
He had married me expecting access to something that no longer existed.
When did he learn?
Probably during reception.
Dad believed Julian had opened envelope privately.
Inside was notification that old provision had been revoked.
The marriage had given him nothing.
I remembered Julian disappearing for twenty minutes after dinner.
When he returned, he was different.
Cold.
Drinking heavily.
Then Evelyn whispered something to him.
An hour later, we were at mansion.
Then attack.
I finally understood.
The disinfectant wasn’t random cruelty after bad argument.
Julian had discovered I was useless to his plan.
I became disposable.
That realization hurt more than my eyes.
Then investigators examined Vance Development.
The company wasn’t thriving.
It was drowning.
Loans.
Failed projects.
Hidden liabilities.
Evelyn’s luxurious lifestyle rested on collapsing foundation.
Sterling Meridian transaction could have saved them.
Dad’s vote could block it.
Julian’s marriage to me was supposed to create leverage.
Then we found something unexpected.
Julian hadn’t initiated relationship with me.
Evelyn had.
Not romantically.
Strategically.
Two years earlier, she attended charity event where I volunteered.
She learned who I was.
Months later, Julian “accidentally” met me at a gallery.
Coincidence?
His calendar contained reminder from Evelyn:
May you like
STERLING GIRL — 7 PM.
My entire love story had been scheduled.
