Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

Lake Mercer property wasn’t mansion.

It was unfinished luxury development.

Vance Development bought land five years earlier.

Project failed.

One house remained.

Records showed Julian visited repeatedly.

Why?

A former accountant named Melissa Grant agreed to speak.

She worked for Vance Development.

She had resigned two years earlier.

Her first words:

“You finally found the Sterling connection.”

Dad and I looked at each other.

“What connection?”

Vance Development had used Sterling Meridian subsidiary names in financing documents without authorization.

Not Dad’s main company directly.

But enough to make lenders believe stronger backing existed.

Fraud allegations required proof.

Melissa had copies.

She hid them after Evelyn threatened to destroy her career.

Where?

Lake Mercer.

Then why didn’t she come forward?

Fear.

Legal uncertainty.

And she believed records had been destroyed.

But Julian knew they existed.

He had spent months searching.

Then Melissa said:

“Charles, somebody from your company helped them.”

Dad froze.

Internal collaborator.

That explained how Vances obtained information.

Not magic.

Not hacking genius.

Someone had access.

Then name emerged.

Martin Keller.

Dad’s former finance director.

Fired quietly for unrelated misconduct.

Keller had provided templates and internal data to Evelyn.

In exchange for money.

Suddenly scheme became larger but still grounded.

Evelyn had built company on deception.

Julian inherited mess.

Then tried to save it.

Melissa revealed one more fact.

Julian once wanted to expose Evelyn.

Three years earlier.

He had copies of records.

Then changed mind.

Why?

Evelyn threatened him.

Not physically.

Financially.

She controlled everything.

Trusts.

Property.

His lifestyle.

His career.

So Julian chose comfort over truth.

Then he chose me.

And somewhere between being manipulated by his mother and manipulating me—

he became exactly like her.
