Chapter 1 - THE DATE

Diane let go of my five-week-old son.
Noah dropped from her arms onto the living-room rug with a sickening thump, and his tiny cry exploded through the house just as I ran in from the hallway.
“NOAH!”
I dropped to my knees.
For one terrifying second, I couldn’t breathe.
His white blanket had twisted beneath him. His little fists were clenched beside his cheeks, his face red as he screamed.
I scooped him against my chest.
“Mommy’s here. Mommy’s here.”
Diane stood beside the sofa as calmly as if she had dropped a pillow.
My mother-in-law didn’t apologize.
She didn’t bend down.
She looked annoyed.
“He needs to be taught a lesson.”
I stared at her.
“He’s five weeks old.”
“He’s spoiled already.”
She reached toward him.
I turned my body away.
“Don’t touch him.”
Diane reached again.
I slapped her hand aside.
When she lunged one more time, something inside me snapped.
My palm struck her cheek.
She stumbled sideways into the elegant sofa.
Ryan came running.
He saw his mother holding her face.
He saw me clutching our screaming newborn.
And somehow he chose her.
“Apologize to Mom.”
I thought I had misheard him.
“What?”
Behind his shoulder, Diane smiled.
Not hurt.
Satisfied.
Then she reached into the leather handbag sitting beside the coffee table and pulled out a thick legal folder.
“This,” she said, slamming it onto the polished wood, “is exactly what we need.”
My sister Claire had been standing near the bassinet.
She moved before Ryan could.
She grabbed the folder.
Ryan’s face changed.
“Give me that.”
Claire stepped back.
“No.”
She opened it.
I watched her scan one page.
Then another.
The color drained from her face.
Ryan lunged for the file.
Claire jerked it away.
“Why do you care so much?”
“Because it’s private.”
“Private from your wife?”
Claire turned one page toward me and pointed at a date near the top.
I adjusted Noah higher against my shoulder and looked.
The words around it blurred.
The date didn’t.
April 6.
Noah had been born May 19.
The papers were more than a month older than my son.
I looked at Ryan.
“Before he was even born?”
He went pale.
Diane’s smile disappeared.
Claire closed the folder against her chest.
“What is this, Ryan?”
He said nothing.
Noah’s crying softened into small, broken sounds against me.
That was when I noticed something else.
Several pages had my name on them.
Several had Ryan’s.
And one had a blank space labeled for an incident involving our baby.

Whatever they had planned, Diane had just tried to create that incident in my living room.
📖 I thought Diane had lost her temper with my newborn, but the date proved someone had been waiting for me to lose mine first. 👇
