Chapter 4 - THE CAMERA ABOVE THE BASSINET

I did not take Noah home that night.
Claire took us to her house.
Ryan protested until the hospital social worker reminded him that I was Noah’s mother and no court order required me to return to the marital home.
He threatened to “handle it legally.”
For once, I hoped he would.
At Claire’s kitchen table, we opened Diane’s folder again.
We photographed every page.
Then Claire stopped.
“Emily.”
“What?”
“Your baby monitor.”
My pulse jumped.
The living room bassinet had a camera mounted on a shelf above it.
Ryan installed it himself two weeks before Noah was born.
Motion detection.
Cloud clips.
I grabbed my phone.
The app still worked.
The first clip showed Diane walking beside the sofa with Noah.
The second showed Ryan leaving the room.
The third began twenty-six seconds before I entered.
Claire pressed play.
Diane held Noah against her shoulder.
He fussed.
She bounced him once.
Then she looked toward the hallway.
Her expression changed.
She lowered him.
Not accidentally.
Not with slipping hands.
She deliberately released him from a short height onto the rug.
My breath stopped.
Noah screamed.
Diane immediately looked toward the hallway again.
Waiting.
I ran into frame.
The rest happened exactly as I remembered.
I picked him up.
She reached.
I blocked her.
She said, “He needs to be taught a lesson.”
I slapped her.
Ryan rushed in afterward.
Afterward.
He had not witnessed the drop.
Yet at the hospital he had confidently described it as an accident.
Claire paused the recording.
“Save it.”
I downloaded the original.
She downloaded another copy.
We emailed one to ourselves and one to the attorney Claire recommended, Lauren Hayes.
Then Claire replayed the final seconds.
Diane’s strange smile appeared right after Ryan demanded I apologize.
She opened the handbag.
She removed the folder.
“This is exactly what we need.”
Claire looked at me.
“That sentence changes everything.”
I nodded.
The petition needed an incident proving I was violent around Noah.
Diane had manufactured one.
The baby monitor captured her doing it.
That was our first major payoff.
Not the whole plan.
But enough to prove the opening scene had not been what Ryan and Diane intended anyone else to see.
My phone buzzed.
Ryan.
I let it ring.
Then a message appeared.
Mom is willing to forget what you did if you come home tonight and apologize.
I read it twice.
Another followed.
If you make this ugly, the custody papers get filed in the morning.
Claire stared at the screen.
I forwarded both messages to Lauren.
Then I typed nothing back.
Ryan thought the folder was still a threat.
He didn’t know we had the video.

Not yet.
📖 The baby monitor proved Diane created the confrontation deliberately, so I stopped defending myself and started asking who had helped her prepare for it. 👇
