Chapter 9 - HIS FIRST COUNTERATTACK

Ryan stopped calling me.

His lawyer did the talking instead.

Two days before the temporary hearing, Lauren received an amended filing.

Ryan now claimed I was alienating Noah from him.

He accused Claire of “radicalizing” me against the Carter family.

He asked the court to require parenting exchanges at our marital home.

The home where Diane had dropped Noah.

Lauren read the filing once.

“He wants you back in that environment.”

“Why?”

“To normalize the idea that you’re safe around Diane.”

I understood.

If I willingly returned, Ryan could later argue my fear was exaggerated.

If I refused, he could call me obstructive.

Either choice helped his story.

Unless we created a third option.

Lauren proposed exchanges at a neutral family-visitation center.

Ryan rejected it.

That rejection became useful.

The temporary hearing lasted less than two hours.

The judge watched the baby-monitor video.

No one spoke while Diane lowered Noah and released him.

Ryan’s attorney tried to characterize the distance as minimal.

The judge asked one question.

“Why was a five-week-old infant intentionally released at all?”

There was no good answer.

Then the judge heard my slap.

I admitted it immediately.

“I struck Diane after she reached for Noah again.”

“Do you believe that was appropriate?”

“No.”

Ryan turned toward me, almost smiling.

I continued.

“I believe protecting Noah was appropriate. I wish I had done it without striking her.”

The smile vanished.

Temporary orders kept Noah primarily with me.

Ryan received scheduled parenting time at the neutral center.

Diane was prohibited from attending those visits pending further review.

Not a final custody ruling.

Not a declaration that Ryan was unfit.

A temporary safety structure.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead Ryan’s attorney handed Lauren a new notice before we left.

Ryan wanted independent psychological evaluations of both parents.

Claire whispered, “He’s still pushing the unstable-mother angle.”

Lauren nodded.

“If evaluation is symmetrical, it can also evaluate him.”

That night, Ryan sent one message through the parenting app.

You could have ended this today.

I replied:

By signing the financial agreement?

Three dots appeared.

Disappeared.

Appeared again.

Then:

You have no idea what you’re destroying.

I stared at the screen.

For the first time, I didn’t feel threatened.

I felt curious.

Not about whether he loved me.

That question was already answered.

About what exactly he believed I could destroy.

The forensic accountant called thirty minutes later.

She had found the first unusual transfer.

$85,000 from a home-equity credit line.

Transferred to Carter Advisory.

Then transferred again.

Recipient:

Diane Carter.

My mother-in-law had not merely helped Ryan build the custody plan.

She had been receiving the money he was trying to hide.

📖 Ryan’s court strategy failed to remove Noah from me, but the first traced transfer showed Diane’s role extended far beyond controlling our child. 👇
