Chapter 17 - DIANE CALLS CHILD SERVICES

Diane’s counterattack came through a government office.
A child-protective-services investigator called Lauren.
An anonymous report claimed I regularly screamed while holding Noah, failed to feed him consistently, and had “violent postpartum episodes.”
Anonymous did not mean mysterious.
The language came almost word for word from Diane’s prewritten affidavit.
My first instinct was fury.
My second was fear.
“What if they take him?”
Lauren’s voice stayed calm.
“Cooperate. Tell the truth. Do not perform.”
The investigator visited Claire’s house.
She inspected where Noah slept.
Asked about feeding.
Medical care.
Support.
The hospital incident.
She asked why I had slapped Diane.
I answered the same way I answered the judge.
“I was protecting Noah. I should have done it without hitting her.”
She watched the complete baby-monitor video.
Not just the slap.
She reviewed the pediatric follow-up records.
Noah had continued feeding normally and showed no injury from the fall, thank God.
The investigator contacted the pediatrician independently.
She spoke to the visitation center.
Ryan’s own supervised reports contained no allegation that I mishandled Noah.
The process still terrified me.
Truth did not make intrusion pleasant.
For two days I barely ate.
Then the investigator called.
The agency was not pursuing removal of Noah from my care.
The report concerning me was unsubstantiated based on the information reviewed.
The allegation concerning Diane’s conduct with Noah remained part of their assessment record and was referred appropriately because the video showed intentional unsafe handling.
I sat at Claire’s table and cried.
Relief.
Anger.
Exhaustion.
Then Lauren received something else.
The anonymous report had included details known only to Ryan and Diane.
That did not identify the caller automatically.
But Diane made the mistake herself.
She texted Claire.
Hope Emily enjoyed having strangers inspect her parenting. Maybe now she understands actions have consequences.
Claire stared at the screen.
“She just admitted it.”
“Not necessarily the legal identity of the reporter,” Lauren said later. “But she certainly demonstrated knowledge and retaliatory intent.”
The message went into our evidence file.
Ryan called me that evening through the parenting app.
I know nothing about Mom’s report.
I believed that might be true.
Then he added:
But maybe outside eyes are good for you.
There it was again.
The cruelty disguised as concern.
I responded only about Saturday’s visit time.
Nothing else.
His ability to pull me into defending myself was fading.
Diane’s report had meant to isolate me.
Instead, a neutral professional had entered my life, examined the exact allegations Diane designed months earlier, and found no basis to remove Noah.
Another question answered.

Another weapon weakened.
