Chapter 12 - WHAT DIANE WANTED

Until then, I assumed Diane was protecting Ryan.

I was wrong.

She wanted something for herself.

Rebecca found it in the bank records.

Of the $417,000 Ryan transferred to his mother, nearly $140,000 had not gone toward his failed investment.

Diane used it.

Designer purchases.

Travel.

A new luxury SUV lease.

Private-club dues.

And $52,000 toward the mortgage on her own house.

Ryan had been hiding losses.

Diane had been stealing opportunity from the hiding place.

“Does he know?” I asked.

Rebecca shrugged.

“The records don’t tell me what he knows.”

Claire had a different source.

Diane’s old phone.

Not stolen.

Not hacked.

Diane herself had left it inside the leather handbag when she stormed out of my house after the hospital incident.

We had turned the handbag and phone over to Lauren rather than searching them.

Lauren arranged lawful return through Diane’s attorney and requested preservation.

In discovery, messages between Ryan and Diane were eventually produced.

One exchange answered the question.

Ryan:

The money is supposed to stay available.

Diane:

Consider it compensation for cleaning up your mess.

Ryan:

I need it back.

Diane:

Then get custody and make Emily sign.

I felt sick.

Diane wasn’t simply a grandmother convinced her son deserved Noah.

She had financial exposure too.

If my lawyer traced the transfers during divorce, Diane could be ordered to explain where the money went and potentially return funds depending on the circumstances.

The custody plan protected both of them.

But another message revealed a more personal motive.

Ryan:

You are not raising Noah.

Diane:

Someone has to. Emily will turn him against us.

Ryan:

You’ll help while I work.

Diane:

Once she’s out, he needs consistency. My house. My rules.

My house.

My rules.

That sounded exactly like Diane.

She had spent my pregnancy correcting everything.

Names.

Feeding plans.

Nursery colors.

Whether I should work.

Whether Noah should be circumcised.

Whether my mother’s surname should appear as his middle name.

Every boundary I set became evidence to her that I was difficult.

Money explained why she helped Ryan.

Control explained why she enjoyed it.

That distinction mattered.

Motives could overlap.

Greed.

Fear.

Entitlement.

Possession.

None excused dropping a newborn.

Lauren looked at me.

“We now understand why she wanted leverage.”

I nodded.

“But I still want to know who decided to use Noah himself.”

Because planning to provoke me was cruel.

Intentionally dropping him was something darker.

And Ryan kept insisting he had never told her to do it.

For once, I believed he might be telling part of the truth.

📖 Diane’s bank records revealed she had money and control to lose, but one unanswered question remained: had Ryan known she would risk Noah to save them? 👇
