Chapter 18 - RYAN’S DEAL

Ryan asked for mediation.

Lauren recommended attending.

“Listening does not obligate you to agree.”

The mediation room was beige, quiet, and almost offensively ordinary considering what we were discussing.

Ryan sat across from me with his lawyer.

No Diane.

For once.

His offer was simple.

He would drop his request for primary custody.

He would agree to a gradual parenting schedule.

He would let me remain in the house.

In exchange, I would accept the $640,000 as marital debt, waive claims relating to transfers to Diane, and end expanded forensic discovery into Carter Advisory.

I stared at him.

“You’re trading custody for money.”

His attorney interrupted.

“That is not an accurate characterization.”

I looked only at Ryan.

“Isn’t it?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I’m trying to stop this from destroying us financially.”

“There is no us.”

“You know what I mean.”

“Yes. Your finances.”

His jaw tightened.

“I made a bad investment.”

“You hid it.”

“I panicked.”

“You sent money through your mother.”

“I was trying to protect cash.”

“She spent it.”

His eyes flickered.

That was confirmation he knew.

“Did you know how much?”

Ryan didn’t answer.

I leaned back.

“You planned to frighten me into accepting these terms.”

“No.”

I placed a copy of Diane’s handwritten note on the table.

His face went rigid.

“My mother wrote that.”

“Yes.”

“I didn’t.”

“Did you know she thought custody was leverage?”

Silence.

That was enough.

The mediator called a break.

Ryan caught me near the hallway.

Supervised staff remained within sight.

“Emily.”

I stopped.

“You know I love Noah.”

“I know.”

He looked surprised.

“I know you love him, Ryan.”

“Then stop treating me like I’m dangerous.”

“You helped create a confrontation around him.”

“I told Mom not to hurt him.”

“You keep saying that as though it erases everything before and after.”

His eyes filled.

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“I was going to lose the business.”

“So you decided I should lose my baby first?”

He flinched.

The mediator resumed the session.

I rejected the deal.

Not because I wanted every dollar.

Because I would not establish a price for Noah.

Financial issues would be resolved with financial evidence.

Custody would be resolved according to Noah’s safety and best interests.

Separate questions.

Separate consequences.

Ryan stared down at the table.

For the first time, he seemed to understand that the leverage was gone.

Then Rebecca called Lauren during the final break.

She had traced another $110,000.

Not to Diane.

Back from Diane.

Into an account Ryan had never disclosed.

His hidden losses were one layer.

His hidden assets were another.

📖 Refusing Ryan’s custody-for-money deal removed his favorite weapon, and the newly discovered account meant his financial story was beginning to collapse from both directions. 👇
