Chapter 6 - WHAT RYAN HAD BEEN RECORDING

Ryan filed the petition that afternoon.
He did exactly what his text threatened.
But he did not attach the baby-monitor video.
He attached a photograph of Diane’s reddened cheek.
He attached her prewritten affidavit.
He attached three audio clips of me shouting during pregnancy.
Lauren played the first one.
“Get out of my room, Ryan!”
The second:
“Stop telling me I’m crazy!”
The third:
“I swear, if your mother touches my things again—”
Each clip ended before the sentence did.
I felt sick.
“I remember these arguments.”
Claire sat beside me.
“Do you remember recording them?”
“No.”
Lauren asked what happened before the first clip.
I closed my eyes.
Ryan had refused to leave our bedroom after I asked for privacy.
He stood in the doorway telling me pregnancy had made me irrational.
Before the second, he had accused me of imagining Diane moving items in the nursery.
I later found those items in Diane’s car.
Before the third, Diane had reorganized my newborn supplies after I repeatedly asked her not to enter the nursery without me.
The clips captured my reactions.
Never the pressure before them.
“Can that work against me?”
“It can be presented against you,” Lauren said. “That does not mean a judge will interpret it the way Ryan wants.”
We submitted the full baby-monitor clip, Diane’s predated affidavit, and Ryan’s messages threatening to file unless I came home.
The court declined Ryan’s request for an immediate ex parte transfer of Noah.
Instead, a temporary hearing was scheduled.
Noah remained with me.
Ryan received limited temporary parenting time by agreement, but Lauren insisted Diane not be present.
Ryan objected.
“She’s his grandmother.”
“She intentionally dropped him,” I said.
“That’s your interpretation.”
I almost shouted.
Lauren touched my wrist beneath the table.
I breathed.
Ryan watched me.
Waiting.
That was the first time I recognized it while it was happening.
He wasn’t merely disagreeing.
He was pushing for a reaction.
I leaned back.
“The video can speak for me.”
His face hardened.
Afterward, Claire drove us home.
On the way, she asked whether Ryan had ever asked to use my phone during pregnancy.
“Constantly.”
“Computer?”
“Yes.”
“Did you share passwords?”
“Some.”
She glanced at me.
“Then he may have more than recordings.”
At Claire’s house, I changed every password I could think of.
Email.
Cloud storage.
Banking.
Photo archive.
Then I opened my email security history.
There were logins from Ryan’s office computer.
More than thirty.
I had never used his office computer.
He hadn’t just been recording arguments.

He had been reading the private messages I sent while trying to understand them.
📖 Ryan’s edited recordings explained how he planned to portray me, but his secret account access suggested he had been studying my fears to manufacture better evidence. 👇
