Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE

The luxury house was sold.
Judith could no longer maintain it alone.
Graham didn’t want it.
Laura definitely didn’t.
I had no claim and wanted none.
Before closing, Graham asked whether I wanted anything from inside.
I said:
“My blue ceramic bowl.”
He laughed sadly.
“You hated that bowl.”
“My dad gave it to me.”
He found it.
Then:
“Anything else?”
I thought.
“No.”
Not furniture.
Not wedding gifts.
Not staircase.
Especially not staircase.
Then Graham asked if I would meet once.
Closure.
I considered.
Agreed.
Public place.
Claire knew.
No expectations.
He looked older.
“So this is it.”
“Yes.”
“I keep thinking about that night.”
“Which one?”
He looked ashamed.
Exactly.
Too many.
Then:
“The stairs.”
“I do too.”
“I should’ve helped you.”
“Yes.”
“I should’ve stopped her.”
“Yes.”
“I should’ve—”
“Graham.”
He stopped.
“You don’t need to list it for me.”
He nodded.
Then:
“Did you ever love me?”
I stared.
“Yes.”
He cried.
“Do you now?”
“No.”
Painful.
True.
Then he asked:
“Do you hate me?”
I thought.
“Less than I expected.”
He almost smiled.
“That’s something.”
“No. Don’t turn it into hope.”
He nodded.
“Right.”
Good.
We left separately.
That was closure.
Not dramatic.
No hug.
Then Claire called.
“How was it?”
“Sad.”
“You okay?”
“Yes.”
And I was.
Then the new owners renovated the Bennett house.
A friend sent a real-estate listing.
I shouldn’t have opened it.
I did.
The staircase had been removed.
Replaced by a modern floating design.
I stared at photo.
The place where I fell no longer existed.
Strangely, that bothered me.
For months, I wanted that staircase erased.
Then someone erased it.
And I realized physical places don’t hold memory.
Bodies do.
So I closed the listing.
Went outside.
Climbed twelve steps to Claire’s porch.
May you like
No hesitation.
That was enough.
