Chapter 6 - JUDITH’S NOTEBOOK

The notebook existed.

Obtained lawfully during evidence preservation.

Judith’s handwriting filled ninety-three pages.

At first:

Household expenses.

Graham’s debts.

My inheritance.

Then:

Nora increasingly emotional.

Nora forgetful.

Nora unstable.

She was constructing a character.

Me.

Then injury dates.

Kitchen.

Garage.

Bathroom.

Christmas.

Some notes contained an “A.”

Accident.

Others:

G.

Graham.

And three:

J.

Judith.

The staircase incident would have been fourth.

Then one sentence made me stop.

Graham getting weak again. Remind him about Daniel.

Who was Daniel?

Not my husband.

No Daniel in our immediate family.

Claire found answer.

Daniel Reeves.

Graham’s former business partner.

Five years earlier.

Fraud investigation.

Charges against Daniel.

Graham had testified.

Judith knew something about that case.

We dug.

Graham hadn’t merely suffered business failure.

He had participated in questionable accounting.

Daniel took most blame.

Judith paid lawyers and helped Graham avoid charges by cooperating.

She held that over him ever since.

Again:

Leverage.

The family wasn’t built on loyalty.

It was built on secrets everyone could use against someone else.

Then we contacted Daniel Reeves.

He was out of prison.

He agreed to talk.

His first words:

“Graham finally hurt somebody, didn’t he?”

My skin went cold.

“How did you know?”

“Because his mother taught him that consequences belong to other people.”

Then Daniel produced emails.

Judith had pressured him to take a plea protecting Graham.

In exchange, she promised financial help for his family.

Then stopped paying after eighteen months.

Daniel hated them.

Understandably.

But hatred wasn’t evidence.

Emails were.

Then he showed us one message from Graham.

I’m sorry. I’ll make this right someday.

He never did.

Pattern.

Promises without courage.

Then Daniel asked me:

“Are you divorcing him?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

No revenge partnership.

No elaborate scheme.

Just information.

Then my attorney found one more notebook entry.

If Nora leaves, use Mercer file.

Mercer?

Dr. Evan Mercer.

The ER doctor who first made me feel believed.

Why was his name in Judith’s notebook months before he treated me?

I called him.

His silence told me immediately.

May you like

He knew the Bennett family.

And Judith had apparently been planning to use something from his past against me.
