Chapter 5 - WHAT JUDITH HAD ON GRAHAM

Graham agreed to meet through attorneys.
I refused private contact.
He looked terrible.
Good.
Not because I enjoyed his suffering.
Because he finally looked like someone who understood consequences.
I placed the letter down.
“You told her no.”
He nodded.
“What changed?”
Silence.
“Graham.”
“My company failed.”
I knew his consulting business struggled.
I didn’t know how badly.
Debt.
Personal guarantees.
Tax problems.
Judith bailed him out.
$480,000.
Then demanded obedience.
He could repay her by helping establish my “incapacity.”
My assets could stabilize our finances.
He told himself it was temporary.
Then violence began.
“Did you plan to kill me?”
His head snapped up.
“No.”
I believed that answer.
Because evidence supported something uglier in a different way.
They wanted me alive.
But powerless.
My signature replaced.
My property managed.
My credibility destroyed.
Judith’s kick down the staircase had not been planned.
It was rage.
She lost control.
And by losing control, she exposed the controlled pattern beneath it.
Then I asked:
“Why keep the videos?”
Graham cried.
“Insurance.”
“Against who?”
“My mother.”
There it was.
He feared Judith too.
So he kept proof.
Not to protect me.
To protect himself if she turned on him.
Cowardice layered on cowardice.
Then:
“Why didn’t you leave her?”
He stared at me.
I laughed bitterly.
“Listen to me asking you the same question people will ask me.”
That shut both of us up.
Fear traps people differently.
But Graham’s fear did not excuse what he did to me.
Then he said:
“There’s another copy.”
“Of what?”
“Mom’s notebook.”
Judith had documented everything.
Dates.
Arguments.
Injuries.
What story to tell doctors.
Where?
Graham looked toward his attorney.
Then back at me.
“In the house.”
Specifically:
Inside the hollow base of the staircase newel post.
May you like
The same staircase Judith kicked me down.
And if Graham was telling the truth, the evidence capable of destroying her entire story had been inches from my hand as I lay broken on the marble floor.
