Chapter 7 - DR. MERCER’S CONNECTION

Dr. Mercer told me himself.
Twenty-six years earlier, he dated Judith’s daughter.
Graham’s older sister.
Laura Bennett.
I had met Laura only twice.
She lived in Oregon.
Barely spoke to the family.
Why?
Same reason as Michael in so many controlling families.
Distance.
Laura left.
Judith told everyone she was selfish.
Dr. Mercer remembered differently.
Judith controlled Laura’s money, college, relationships.
When Laura chose medicine instead of joining the family real-estate business, Judith cut her off.
Evan helped her leave.
Judith never forgave him.
Years later, Evan became an ER physician.
Judith knew.
“Why write ‘use Mercer file’?”
He looked ashamed.
Early in his career, he had received a disciplinary warning after a medication documentation error.
No patient harm.
Resolved.
Publicly available if searched deeply.
Judith planned to attack his credibility if he ever documented abuse.
She had researched him.
That chilled me.
She didn’t simply react to threats.
She catalogued them.
Then Evan said:
“I recognized your last name when you came in.”
“You knew who I was?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you say?”
“Because you were my patient, not Laura’s sister-in-law.”
Good answer.
Then:
“Did that affect what you saw on the X-ray?”
“No.”
The fractures were objective.
Medical review confirmed.
No dependency on Evan alone.
Important.
Then Laura called me.
She had heard.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For not warning you.”
“Would I have listened?”
She laughed sadly.
“Probably not.”
Fair.
Then she told me Judith had done something similar to her.
Not physical violence.
Medical narrative.
At nineteen, Laura had panic attacks.
Judith used them to argue Laura couldn’t manage tuition money Grandma left her.
Temporary control became years.
Laura fought free at twenty-four.
That was the blueprint.
I wasn’t first.
Then Laura said:
“There’s a family attorney who helped her.”
Name:
Samuel Price.
Same attorney who drafted my prenuptial agreement.
My stomach dropped.
He had inserted the incapacity clause.
Was it standard?
Maybe not.
We had independent counsel when signing.
But my attorney at the time had received the draft from Price.
We reviewed records.
The clause had been aggressively proposed by Graham’s side.
I accepted because I trusted him.
Now its purpose looked different.
Then Price denied wrongdoing.
He claimed Judith asked for lawful asset-protection language.
Possible.
No proof he knew about abuse.
We did not invent guilt.
But Laura had one document.
A letter Price sent Judith years earlier:
You cannot manufacture incapacity merely because Laura refuses your advice.
He had warned her.
May you like
Meaning Judith already knew exactly where the legal line was.
And with me, she had spent two years trying to create enough medical evidence to step around it.
