Chapter 11 - Ryan’s Older Brother
The security footage showed Patricia entering the office with a man named Thomas Carter.
Ryan’s older brother.
Thomas had remained almost invisible throughout the scandal.
He lived in Indiana and claimed he knew nothing about Carter Development Group.
In reality, he controlled a consulting company that received monthly payments from Ryan.
Those payments exceeded two million dollars over five years.
Thomas used part of the money to cover Patricia’s gambling debts.
The family celebration at Bellmere was not only about the Halstead transfer.
It was meant to reassure Thomas that Ryan could rescue the company and keep the payments flowing.
When I refused to sign, everyone’s hidden income was threatened.
Thomas helped Patricia enter the security office because he feared the restaurant footage would expose the planning conversation.
He was arrested for burglary and evidence tampering.
During questioning, Thomas tried to blame Patricia.
Then investigators showed him bank records proving he benefited from the fraud.
He began cooperating.
Thomas revealed that Ryan had not originally planned to marry me for money.
At least not entirely.
We met in law school.
We built careers together.
For several years, our marriage had been real.
But after my father died and Halstead Tower passed solely to me, Patricia began pressuring Ryan.
She told him I did not respect him because I kept the property separate.
She compared our wealth.
She called him weak.
She said a real husband controlled the family assets.
At first, Ryan defended me.
Then Carter Development Group began losing money.
Patricia’s voice became louder.
Vanessa entered his life.
And Ryan chose the easiest story.
I was selfish.
He was entitled.
The building should be his.
That story allowed him to betray me without seeing himself as a thief.
Thomas gave investigators a recorded family meeting from six months earlier.
Patricia’s voice dominated the conversation.
“Emily has no children. If the marriage ends, we lose access forever.”
Ryan replied, “I’m not divorcing her until the trust is transferred.”
Thomas asked, “What if she finds out about Vanessa?”
Ryan laughed.
“She still thinks marriage means something.”
Hearing that sentence hurt.
Not because I wanted him back.
Because I remembered defending him.
When friends noticed his coldness, I said he was stressed.
When Naomi questioned company transactions, I told her Ryan would never deceive me.
I had protected the image of our marriage while he planned to use it against me.
The prosecutor offered Thomas a reduced charge for cooperation.
He accepted.
Ryan refused every plea deal.
He believed a jury would see the case as a bitter divorce.
Patricia agreed.
They underestimated the power of one simple image.
