Chapter 6 - The Practice Run

The recovered footage began forty minutes before dinner.
Patricia stood behind my chair while the table was still empty.
Ryan watched from the side.
She reached toward the chair and demonstrated how she would grab my hair.
Ryan laughed.
“Don’t actually hurt her.”
“I want her frightened.”
“She has to look unstable, not injured.”
Patricia pointed toward the salad plate.
“This will humiliate her without leaving much evidence.”
Ryan glanced toward the ceiling camera.
Then called the events coordinator.
The video showed her disabling the local recording display.
They believed that meant the camera was off.
It was not.
The footage continued.
Ryan instructed a waiter to delay serving the main course until after the confrontation.
Patricia rehearsed what she would say about my mental condition.
Then Vanessa entered through the side dining room.
She kissed Ryan.
Patricia embraced her.
The three of them toasted beside the table where I would later be assaulted.
Vanessa asked, “What if Emily walks away?”
Ryan answered, “Then we say she abandoned the family during a crisis.”
“And if she fights?”
Patricia smiled.
“Then everyone sees what we’ve been saying about her.”
The most painful moment came last.
Ryan picked up my place card.
He removed it from the table.
“She won’t need this after Monday.”
Naomi paused the video.
“Do you still want to go to the board meeting?”
“Yes.”
“They may become aggressive.”
“They already did.”
We prepared carefully.
The assault report was filed.
Police interviewed three diners.
Two had recorded parts of the confrontation.
One was a retired judge.
Another was a trauma surgeon who saw Patricia attempt to force my face down a second time.
The restaurant footage was authenticated.
The financial injunction was ready.
The medical-forgery evidence was preserved.
But I wanted one more thing.
I wanted Ryan to speak freely.
So I did not contact him after leaving the restaurant.
I did not answer his twenty-three calls.
I did not respond when Patricia sent a message accusing me of embarrassing the family.
Silence made them nervous.
By Sunday evening, Ryan’s messages changed.
First anger.
Then concern.
Then false tenderness.
Emily, come home. We can fix this.
At midnight:
You’re overreacting.
At two in the morning:
If you miss the board meeting, decisions will be made without you.
At six:
Please don’t ruin everything we built.
I replied with one sentence.
I’ll be there at nine.
Ryan immediately called Patricia.
Melissa still had access to the company phone system.
The call was automatically archived.
Patricia asked, “Does she know?”
May you like
Ryan said, “No. If she knew, she would never walk into that room.”
👉 Ryan expected Emily to enter the boardroom as a disgraced wife—but she was bringing investigators, witnesses, and the ring he had laughed at.
