Chapter 1 - Eat It
“Eat it.”
Patricia’s fingers twisted into my hair before I could turn around.
Then she drove my face into the salad.
My cheek struck cold lettuce and creamy dressing. The oval plate slid across the white tablecloth and hit the stem of Ryan’s wineglass hard enough to make it tremble.
The entire restaurant seemed to inhale at once.
Patricia held me down for one humiliating second.
Then she released me.
I pushed myself upright with both hands.
Lettuce hung from my hair.
Dressing ran from my cheek to the neckline of my black dress.
Across from me, strangers stared in horror.
Beside me, my husband laughed.
Ryan leaned back in his chair and pointed at my face.
“You look better now.”
His mother smiled behind me.
That hurt more than the plate.
Not because Ryan had failed to protect me.
Because he had enjoyed watching me break.
I lifted one hand to wipe my cheek.
Then stopped.
My dark phone was lying beside my folded napkin.
Above us, a security camera faced the center of the dining room.
Both had been visible before Patricia touched me.
I slid my phone beneath my palm and tapped the recording control.
My fingers were trembling.
Then they became perfectly still.
Patricia leaned over me again.
Her manicured hand clamped around my shoulder.
She tried to force me back toward the plate.
This time, I caught her wrist.
Her smile vanished.
“Let go of me.”
I held her there for half a second.
Then I released her and stood.
Slowly, I removed my wedding ring.
The gold band struck the table beside Ryan’s wineglass with a sharp metallic click.
His laughter stopped.
I placed the phone upright beside the ring, its camera aimed toward both of them.
“Keep laughing.”
Ryan looked at the phone.
Then at the ceiling camera.
Then at the diners watching us.
His face changed.
I picked up my handbag.
“You just ended our marriage.”
Ryan rose halfway from his chair.
“Emily, wait.”
Patricia reached toward my phone.
Three diners stepped closer.
She stopped.
I walked away without looking back.
Behind me, the recording continued.
