Chapter 7 - The Monday Meeting

The boardroom occupied the forty-second floor of Carter Development Group’s headquarters.
Ryan sat at the head of the table.
Patricia sat to his right despite holding no official position.
Vanessa sat in my chair.
When I entered, everyone went silent.
I wore a cream suit.
My hair was down.
The bruising near my scalp was hidden, but faint scratches remained along my cheek.
Ryan stood.
“Emily.”
Vanessa did not move from my seat.
I placed my handbag on the table.
Then I set my wedding ring in front of Ryan.
The same ring I had dropped beside his wineglass.
Patricia’s mouth tightened.
“This is a private board meeting.”
“I’m still chief legal officer.”
“You’re on medical leave,” Ryan said.
“I took personal leave.”
Dr. Kessler entered through a side door carrying a folder.
Ryan looked relieved.
The plan was moving forward.
Kessler addressed the board.
He claimed confidentiality prevented him from discussing details, but said I had exhibited severe emotional instability.
I let him speak.
He described appointments that never happened.
He described symptoms I never reported.
He recommended temporary removal from all fiduciary responsibilities.
When he finished, I asked one question.
“What date did you first evaluate me?”
“March twelfth.”
“Where?”
“My clinic.”
“Which room?”
He hesitated.
“Consultation room three.”
I turned toward Naomi.
She displayed security records from my father’s rehabilitation facility.
On March twelfth, I had been in Wisconsin for nineteen consecutive hours.
Video, badge logs, and witness statements proved it.
Kessler’s face changed.
I asked about the second appointment.
He named another date.
I had been speaking at a legal conference in Denver.
The event was streamed live.
The third appointment supposedly occurred while I was inside a federal courthouse.
Three impossible visits.
Ryan interrupted.
“This is becoming theatrical.”
“No,” I said. “The restaurant was theatrical.”
Naomi connected her laptop to the boardroom screen.
The video began.
Patricia stood behind my empty chair rehearsing the assault.
Ryan’s recorded voice filled the room.
“She has to look unstable, not injured.”
A board member pushed away from the table.
Vanessa turned toward Ryan.
“You told me she attacked your mother.”
Ryan stared at the screen.
The footage showed Vanessa kissing him next.
Her face went white.
She had known about the fraud.
But she had not known the assault was staged.
Patricia stood.
“This footage was obtained illegally.”
The boardroom doors opened.
Two detectives entered with federal investigators.
Ryan’s confidence collapsed.
Then Naomi placed the sealed injunction in front of him.
“The Halstead transfer is frozen.”
Ryan looked at me.
“You’ll destroy the company.”
May you like
“No,” I said. “You already did.”
👉 Ryan had lost the property transfer—but Patricia still possessed a signed document that appeared to give her control of Emily’s trust.
