Chapter 12 - The Trial Begins

The courtroom was full.

The restaurant video had never been publicly released, but the case attracted national attention.

Ryan sat beside his attorneys.

Patricia sat at a separate defense table.

Neither looked at me.

The prosecutor began with the assault.

The waiter testified that Ryan asked him to place the largest salad plate in front of me.

He was instructed not to intervene if “the family argument became emotional.”

Ryan told him Patricia might “make a point.”

The events coordinator admitted she was paid ten thousand dollars to disable the local camera system.

She believed the footage would disappear.

The security vendor explained the automatic cloud backup.

Then the video played.

On a large courtroom screen, Patricia stood behind my empty chair and practiced grabbing my hair.

Ryan laughed.

Vanessa kissed him.

They discussed making me look unstable.

Several jurors looked toward Ryan.

He stared straight ahead.

Then the active assault appeared.

Patricia’s hands.

My body folding forward.

Ryan’s laughter.

“You look better now.”

The courtroom became silent.

My phone recording followed.

It captured Patricia’s second attempt to force me down.

It captured my ring striking the table.

It captured Ryan’s panic when he noticed the phone.

The prosecutor paused the image on his face.

Then she moved to the financial evidence.

The forged medical file.

The fake appointments.

The hidden transfer language.

The backdated trust document.

The lender deposit.

The escape tickets.

Every piece fit the same plan.

Humiliate me.

Declare me unstable.

Take control.

Move the building.

Leave the country.

Ryan’s attorney argued that Patricia acted alone at the restaurant.

Then the prosecutor played his own words.

“She has to look unstable, not injured.”

Patricia’s attorney claimed she had reacted emotionally after years of family conflict.

Then the prosecutor played her porch confession.

“A wife who refuses to support her husband should lose the right to control anything.”

Dr. Kessler testified under a plea agreement.

He admitted Patricia paid him.

He admitted Ryan supplied the personal information used to create the diagnosis.

He admitted no evaluation occurred.

Finally, Melissa testified.

She described forging my signature under Ryan’s instructions.

Ryan’s attorney attacked her credibility.

Melissa answered quietly.

“I lied for him because I was afraid. I’m telling the truth because Emily was the person they were trying to erase.”

Then it was my turn.

The prosecutor asked what I felt when Ryan laughed.

I looked directly at him.

“I stopped wondering whether my marriage could be saved.”

Ryan finally looked away.

👉 Emily’s testimony ended the illusion of a bitter divorce—but Patricia still had one final lie designed to turn the jury against her.
