Chapter 9 - Vanessa Learns the Truth

Vanessa followed me out of the boardroom.
“Emily, wait.”
I turned.
She looked younger without confidence.
“Did Ryan really buy the condominium with that deposit?”
“Yes.”
“He told me it came from a performance bonus.”
“He has not received a bonus in three years.”
Her eyes filled.
“I didn’t know about the forged medical file.”
“You knew he was trying to take my property.”
“He said the trust was structured unfairly.”
“You knew he was married.”
“He said you were divorcing.”
“We were not.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He showed me papers.”
“Forged papers?”
She looked away.
That was answer enough.
I did not feel sympathy for her.
But she possessed information.
“What else did he ask you to do?”
She hesitated.
Then told me about a confidential lender presentation.
Ryan had used projections based on rental income from Halstead Tower.
Vanessa prepared the slides.
She assumed I had approved the transaction.
Two days earlier, Ryan asked her to alter the date on an email to make it appear I received the final contract.
“Did you do it?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he said you were trying to sabotage the company out of jealousy.”
I almost laughed.
Patricia assaulted me.
Ryan laughed.
Vanessa helped falsify records.
Yet each of them claimed jealousy belonged to me.
I told Vanessa to speak with investigators.
She asked whether I would protect her.
“No.”
Her face tightened.
“But cooperation may matter.”
She nodded.
Before walking away, she said, “He told me you didn’t love him.”
“I loved the man he pretended to be.”
Vanessa’s cooperation exposed more.
Ryan had moved company money into personal accounts.
He paid Patricia’s debts.
He purchased jewelry, vacations, and the condominium.
He also maintained a hidden apartment near the airport.
Vanessa believed it was used for business meetings.
Investigators searched it.
Inside, they found multiple passports, cash, and airline tickets dated for Tuesday morning.
Ryan planned to leave the country after the Halstead transfer.
The ticket listed one companion.
Not Vanessa.
Patricia.
Ryan intended to abandon his mistress after using her to help remove me.
When Vanessa learned, she requested another interview.
She turned over every message she had.
Including one from Ryan written after the restaurant assault:
Mom handled Emily perfectly. By Monday she’ll have no marriage, no company, and no building.
The message was enough to prove intent.
Detectives returned to the boardroom.
Ryan stood as they approached.
“What is this?”
An officer asked him to place his hands behind his back.
Patricia screamed that the arrest was a mistake.
Ryan looked at me.
“Emily, tell them we can resolve this privately.”
I looked at the man who laughed while his mother held my face in food.
May you like
“No,” I said. “You made it public.”
👉 Ryan was arrested, but Patricia still believed Emily would never testify against the woman who had once saved her father’s life.
