Chapter 1 - THE SLAP

Diane’s hand was already tangled in my fifteen-month-old daughter’s hair when I came out of the hallway.
She yanked Lily around so hard my baby stumbled.
Then she slapped her.
The sound cracked through the living room.
Lily fell backward onto the sofa, one tiny hand pressed to the fresh red mark blooming across her cheek.
“Go ahead, cry,” Diane snapped. “Just try it.”
Lily stopped.
Not because she wasn’t hurt.
Because she was terrified.
Something inside me went cold.
Diane lifted her hand again.
I knocked it away.
“Touch her again, I dare you.”
I pulled Lily behind me.
Diane’s floral blouse shifted as she lunged forward.
“Get out of my way.”
“Just try touching her.”
She shoved toward me.
I caught her wrist and pushed her back.
Diane dropped onto the sofa. Her handbag and a throw pillow hit the oak floor.
“She deserved it!”
That was when Ryan appeared in the hallway.
My husband stood there in his white shirt and dark trousers, staring at Lily.
Then his mother.
Then the red mark on our daughter’s cheek.
“Your mother hit her!” I shouted.
Ryan didn’t rush to Lily.
He didn’t ask what happened.
He didn’t even look shocked.
“Emma…” His jaw tightened. “Stop making a scene.”
I stared at him.
“Stop making trouble?”
He said nothing.
Behind me, Lily whimpered.
I expected her to reach for me.
Instead, she stepped out from behind my leg and looked directly at Ryan.
“Mom…” she sobbed.
Her little voice trembled.
“Grandma didn’t do it alone.”
Silence.
Ryan’s face went white.
Not confused.
Not offended.
Afraid.
Diane stood slowly.
“Lily doesn’t know what she’s saying.”
Ryan still wouldn’t look at our daughter.
I turned toward him.
“What does she mean?”
His lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Then Lily pointed toward the short hallway.
“Daddy… room.”
Ryan’s head snapped up.
Diane’s handbag was still on the floor.
Her phone had slid halfway out.
The screen lit.
A notification appeared.
RYAN:
Delete the other video before Emma gets home.
My pulse stopped.
The message had been sent forty-three minutes earlier.
Before I walked into the room.
Before Diane slapped Lily in front of me.
I bent down and picked up the phone.
Ryan moved.
“Emma, don’t.”
That was the first thing he said with real urgency.
Not don’t touch Lily.
Not Mom, what did you do?
Don’t look at the phone.
I stepped back.
“What video?”
Diane’s eyes narrowed.
Ryan looked at his mother.
That glance lasted less than a second.
It told me everything and nothing.
They had discussed something.
Something involving Lily.
Something they had expected to hide before I got home.
I pulled my daughter into my arms.
Her little body shook against mine.
Then she whispered into my neck:
“Daddy watched.”
Ryan closed his eyes.
And for the first time, I understood why my husband hadn’t been surprised by the mark on Lily’s face.
He had seen something before.
May you like
Something bad enough that he and his mother needed a video erased.
📖 I thought Ryan’s silence was cowardice, but what I found on our home-security system showed he had made a deliberate choice long before I walked into that room. 👇
