Chapter 4 - THE DOCTOR

Thomas tried to leave.
Rachel blocked the doorway without touching him.
“Authorities are already coming.”
He stopped.
Ryan whispered, “Emma, please.”
I looked at Thomas.
“Why were they recording my daughter?”
He didn’t answer.
Diane did.
“She has behavioral problems.”
I stared at her.
“She’s fifteen months old.”
“She has episodes.”
“What episodes?”
“Defiance. Screaming. Attachment issues.”
Rachel looked disgusted.
Thomas finally spoke.
“Diane, stop.”
That was the first indication he understood how insane she sounded.
Then he turned to me.
“I was asked informally whether certain behaviors could indicate developmental concerns.”
“By whom?”
“Ryan.”
I looked at my husband.
He rubbed his jaw.
“Mom thought Lily wasn’t normal.”
Diane snapped:
“She isn’t.”
Lily began crying.
I held her tighter.
Thomas continued carefully.
“I told Ryan that video without clinical context is not a diagnosis.”
“Then why were you coming here?”
“Ryan texted me that Diane had created another incident and there was visible injury.”
Another.
The word punched through me.
“How many?”
Thomas said nothing.
Ryan whispered:
“Two.”
Diane corrected him.
“Three.”
I looked at my husband.
His eyes filled.
Three.
Three incidents he knew about.
Three times my baby had been hurt badly enough that they discussed it.
The police arrival ended the immediate confrontation.
Statements were taken.
Lily was medically evaluated.
The visible injuries were documented.
The process did not magically decide guilt in one afternoon.
But Diane was no longer allowed to remain casually in my house.
Ryan left voluntarily after I told him I wanted space and after legal advice made clear what steps I should and should not take.
That night, Rachel stayed with me.
Lily slept badly.
Every forty minutes, she woke crying.
At 2:13 a.m., I sat beside her crib while Rachel reviewed copies of the security-account logs.
“Emma.”
I turned.
“What?”
“The deletion wasn’t Ryan’s first administrator action.”
She showed me.
Over six weeks, Ryan had exported eleven clips.
Eleven.
Most were from daytime hours when Diane watched Lily.
He had created a folder.
LILY OBSERVATIONS.
I accessed it through our shared family server.
Ten files had been removed.
One remained.
The thumbnail showed Lily in her high chair.
Diane beside her.
Ryan behind the camera.
I pressed play.
Diane placed a spoon on the tray.
Lily pushed it away.
Diane grabbed her wrist.
“Again.”
Lily cried.
Ryan’s voice came from behind the camera.
“Mom, don’t leave marks.”
I stopped the video.
My hands were shaking.
Not stop hurting her.
Not leave marks.
That was the first major payoff.
Ryan wasn’t merely a frightened witness.
He had helped manage what could be seen.
Then the audio continued for two seconds before I closed it.
Diane said:
“When Emma sees the report, she’ll finally understand.”
Report.
There was paperwork somewhere.
Something they were building about my daughter.
May you like
And apparently about me.
📖 The surviving clip proved Ryan had helped conceal Diane’s abuse, but the mysterious “report” showed Lily was only one part of a plan aimed directly at me. 👇
