Chapter 6 - THE TRUST

The trust held $3.4 million.

Most of it couldn’t be touched for Lily’s personal benefit without proper accounting.

Ryan knew that.

Diane knew that.

My father had made the rules deliberately strict.

Then I found a letter from Ryan to the trust administrator.

Not a withdrawal request.

An inquiry.

If Emma Parker becomes incapacitated or legally unable to act, what documentation is required to activate successor-trustee authority?

Date:

Five weeks earlier.

My stomach turned.

That was before the first video Ryan claimed he made because he “suspected” Diane was too rough.

The plan preceded the abuse documentation.

Rebecca studied the language.

“An inquiry isn’t wrongdoing by itself.”

“I know.”

I hated how often those words mattered.

Nothing was one magic piece of proof.

Then another document appeared.

A draft physician declaration.

It described me as experiencing:

Severe anxiety.

Erratic sleep.

Emotional volatility.

Possible medication misuse.

Signed:

Thomas Bell, M.D.

Unsigned.

Draft only.

I remembered Thomas’s expression when he entered the house.

This isn’t supposed to happen.

Diane wasn’t supposed to leave marks.

Because visible injury to Lily contradicted the story they were constructing.

Their version needed Lily to look distressed around me.

Not injured around Diane.

I asked Rebecca:

“Can they actually take the trust with this?”

“No.”

That was important.

“One private report and one doctor’s statement don’t magically remove a trustee. There would be legal processes, evidence, challenge, and fiduciary obligations.”

Relief lasted two seconds.

“But?”

“But someone appears to be preparing materials for a future dispute.”

Rachel searched Ryan’s email archive through an account he had left logged into our shared desktop.

She found a message from Diane.

Subject:

Timing.

Once Emma reacts publicly, we use everything.

Ryan replied:

I’m not doing anything until we have enough.

Diane:

Then get enough.

That exchange changed my understanding again.

Ryan wasn’t simply obeying his mother.

He was participating.

Maybe reluctantly.

But consciously.

Then my phone rang.

Ryan.

I let Rebecca advise me before answering.

He sounded exhausted.

“Can I see Lily?”

“Not without whatever arrangements are appropriate right now.”

“Emma, I’m her father.”

“And you filmed your mother hurting her.”

Silence.

Then:

“I didn’t know she’d go that far.”

“Why were you building a case against me?”

His breathing changed.

“Because Mom said you were going to take Lily and disappear.”

I laughed once.

“Based on what?”

“She showed me messages.”

“What messages?”

“From you.”

I stopped.

Ryan continued.

“You told your sister you’d leave me before you let my mother control Lily.”

I had said something similar.

Months ago.

But not what he claimed.

Then Rachel looked up.

“Emma.”

She held my old phone.

There were message exports.

Edited screenshots.

Someone had removed words.

Changed context.

Ryan had been manipulated too.

But he still chose what he did afterward.

And that choice was becoming harder to excuse.

📖 Diane had fed Ryan edited messages to make him fear losing Lily, but learning that didn’t clear him—it raised the question of when he discovered she was lying and kept going anyway. 👇
