Chapter 7 - THE EDITED MESSAGES

The real message to Rachel had been:
If Ryan ever lets Diane control Lily’s medical care without me, I’ll leave before I let that become normal.
Diane’s screenshot read:
I’ll leave with Lily before Ryan can stop me.
Six words removed.
Everything changed.
There were more.
A joke about moving to Denver became a supposed relocation plan.
A complaint about Diane became “evidence” I hated Ryan’s family.
A message written during an argument became proof I was preparing to take Lily away.
Ryan had seen all of them.
I wanted to feel sorry for him.
Then Rebecca asked the question I couldn’t avoid.
“Did he ever verify them with you?”
No.
“Did he confront you?”
No.
“Did he consult independent counsel before secretly creating records?”
No.
He went to his mother.
Then Thomas.
Then Marissa.
Then the trust administrator.
Fear may have started it.
Secrecy sustained it.
That afternoon, Ryan asked to meet with attorneys present.
I agreed.
He looked ten years older.
“I believed Mom.”
“For how long?”
“A month.”
“And after that?”
His eyes dropped.
There.
That was the answer.
“What happened after a month?”
“I saw one original message on your iPad.”
“The Denver message?”
He nodded.
“You realized she altered it.”
“Yes.”
Rachel muttered:
“Jesus.”
I leaned back.
“Then why didn’t you stop?”
Ryan rubbed both hands over his face.
“Because by then I had already sent videos to Marissa. I had already talked to Thomas. Mom said if I backed out, you’d find out and take Lily.”
“So you kept building a false case.”
“I told myself I was slowing her down.”
“By filming my baby getting hurt?”
“I didn’t think Mom would actually hurt her.”
I stood.
“Ryan, I watched a video where you said ‘don’t leave marks.’”
His face crumpled.
“I know.”
“Explain that.”
He couldn’t.
Then he finally whispered:
“The first time she grabbed Lily, I panicked. Mom said if there was no visible injury, nobody would misunderstand the discipline.”
“Discipline?”
“I didn’t believe that.”
“You repeated her language anyway.”
He started crying.
I felt nothing.
Not yet.
Then Ryan revealed the next layer.
Diane wasn’t the person who first suggested the family assessment.
Thomas was.
The physician.
Why?
Because Thomas owed Diane money.
A lot.
Diane had financed his private clinic expansion.
$420,000.
And Thomas had been providing Diane “medical guidance” in exchange for flexible repayment.
Rebecca’s expression sharpened.
Now we had a financial relationship.
But not necessarily proof of conspiracy.
Then Ryan said:
“Thomas told Mom a competency challenge could work.”
I stared at him.
“Could work for what?”
Ryan looked at the table.
“For control of the trust.”
There it was.
No more vague implications.
He had known.
Maybe not from the beginning.
But before Lily was slapped.
Before today.
May you like
Before I walked into that living room.
📖 Ryan finally admitted the trust was the target, but the financial records showed Diane wanted far more than Lily’s money—and she had been preparing the same kind of takeover against someone else. 👇
