Chapter 10 - DAVID TOLD HIS MOTHER NO

The test came at Rose’s seventh birthday.

Margaret sent a large package.

No return message.

Inside was a custom doll wearing a replica of the blue princess dress.

My stomach dropped.

Rose stared.

“Why would she do that?”

I didn’t know.

David did.

He called Margaret with me listening.

“You cannot send Rose gifts without asking.”

“She is my granddaughter.”

“That doesn’t answer me.”

“The doll is an apology.”

“No. It’s a reminder.”

“You’re letting Emily poison her against me.”

Old David would have softened.

Explained me.

Negotiated.

This David said:

“Stop.”

Silence.

“You do not blame Emily for the consequences of what you did.”

Margaret started crying.

“I have lost my entire family.”

David’s face tightened.

I saw the old mechanism activate.

Her pain.

His responsibility.

Then he said:

“I’m sorry you’re hurting. I’m not changing the boundary.”

That was the moment I knew therapy had reached somewhere real.

He returned the doll.

Rose chose a dinosaur instead.
