Chapter 12 - I WITHDREW THE DIVORCE
I did not do it for Rose.
That distinction mattered.
Children should not carry responsibility for keeping parents married.
I did not do it because Margaret apologized.
She had not yet done so meaningfully.
I did not do it because David suffered enough.
Marriage is not a reward for punishment completed.
I withdrew the divorce because after almost two years of separation, therapy, structured parenting, financial accountability, and painful honesty, I wanted to attempt reconciliation.
Attempt.
Not erase.
David moved back slowly.
First dinners.
Then weekends.
Then one overnight.
Rose’s therapist monitored her adjustment.
She was happy.
Also suspicious.
“Are you going to fight?”
“Sometimes,” I said.
Her eyes widened.
David laughed.
I continued.
“People disagree. The important part is what we do when we disagree.”
Rose thought.
“No hitting?”
“No hitting.”
“No spitting?”
“Definitely no spitting.”
“No stealing my money?”
David’s face changed.
“No.”
