Chapter 14 - ROSE CHOSE THE BLUE DRESS

The dress stayed in my closet for almost three years.

Then one Saturday, Rose found it.

She was nine.

Too tall for it.

The hem sat above her knees.

She held it against herself.

“This is the one?”

“Yes.”

“From Grandma’s party?”

“Yes.”

She looked at me.

“Can I cut it?”

I laughed.

“It’s yours.”

We turned it into something else.

Not symbolically at first.

Practically.

Rose cut the skirt.

I helped sew pieces onto a pillow.

The bodice became fabric for a doll dress.

Some scraps went into the trash.

Rose did not cry.

She did not deliver a speech.

When we finished, she held up the pillow.

“Cool.”

That was healing.

Not reclaiming the exact object.

Changing its purpose because she could.

Later that year, Rose agreed to a supervised meeting with Margaret.

David and I attended.

Margaret looked older.

No silver-gray party dress.

No pearls.

Simple navy cardigan.

She did not reach for Rose.

“Hi.”

“Hi.”

Silence.

Then Rose asked:

“Why did you slap me?”

Margaret looked directly at her.

“Because I was angry and wanted to control you.”

“Because of the money?”

“Partly.”

“Because of Mom?”

“Partly.”

“Because of me?”

“No.”

Rose watched her.

“Dad said you thought the money was family money.”

“I did.”

“But I’m family.”

Margaret’s face crumpled.

“Yes.”

“Then that was dumb.”

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it.

Margaret almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Rose said:

“I don’t want you at my birthday yet.”

Margaret nodded.

“Okay.”

“But maybe soccer.”

“Okay.”

No hug.

No demand.

No sudden restoration.

May you like

A boundary accepted.

That was enough.
