Chapter 10 - Arresting the Lawyer
Arthur Vance's face went completely ghost white instantly.
He took two fast steps backward away from Margaret.
He placed his legal papers back into his briefcase.
"I was not aware of any wire fraud, Daniel," Arthur.
"I am withdrawing as defense counsel effective immediately today."
Lucas grabbed his lawyer's sleeve in pure, panic.
"Arthur! You can't abandon us! We paid you!"
Arthur pulled his arm away from Lucas's grip cold.
He turned around, trying to run down driveway fast.
Officer Davis signaled his partner with a quick head gesture.
The second officer stepped in front of Arthur Vance.
He grabbed the lawyer's wrist, twisting his arm back.
Cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around Arthur's wrists.
"Arthur Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy fraud."
The high-priced corporate lawyer wept on the brick driveway.
His entire legal career was destroyed in five seconds.
Margaret, Lucas, and Arthur were all held in cuffs.
The three corrupt criminals were loaded into police cars.
The heavy metal doors slammed shut with loud thuds.
The police cars drove away, emergency sirens blaring.
Neighbors gathered along the sidewalk, filming the whole scene.
The story of the wealthy Carter family arrest exploded.
I turned around, running back to the waiting ambulance.
I climbed into the rear passenger seat beside Elena.
Paramedic Sarah held the oxygen mask over Elena's face.
"We are heading to St. Jude ER right now, sir!"
The ambulance sped away from the luxury mansion estate.
I held my wife's trembling hand in my palms.
"Hang on, sweetheart, we are almost at hospital."
Elena smiled weakly through her plastic oxygen mask.
"Our baby is going to be safe, Daniel," she.
"Yes, our baby is going to be safe forever."
The long nightmare at the mansion was coming to end.
