Chapter 5 - The Gambling Secret

Lucas's mouth opened, but no sound came out at all.
Sweat broke out across his forehead in heavy beads.
He realized his secret Vegas debt was fully exposed.
"How... how did you find out about Bellagio?" Lucas.
"I hired a private forensic investigator last week," I.
"I noticed small discrepancies in our quarterly accounting files."
"I found out you lost four hundred thousand in poker."
"And you stole corporate money to cover your debt."
Margaret grabbed Lucas's arm, shaking him in total shock.
"Lucas! You told me you bought commercial real estate!"
"You told me the money was safely invested in land!"
Lucas pulled his arm away from our mother furiously.
"You knew I was transferring the funds, Mom!"
"You helped me sign the secondary authorization papers!"
"You said Daniel was too stupid to notice discrepancies!"
The two monsters began turning on each other instantly now.
Their fake family unity disintegrated into bitter screaming arguments.
Elena sat in the leather armchair, watching them in shock.
She could not believe the people who abused her.
They were lying thieves tearing each other apart for money.
"Shut your mouth, Lucas!" Margaret screamed out hysterically.
"I did everything to protect you from prison!"
"I let you live in this luxury mansion for free!"
"And you blame your own mother for your gambling?"
I slammed my palm down onto the mahogany desk hard.
The loud crack echoed through the study like gunshot.
Both of them froze instantly, turning their heads toward.
"Both of you shut up right now!" I barked.
"You are both guilty of corporate fraud and conspiracy."
"You stole six hundred eighty-four thousand dollars cash."
"And you abused my pregnant wife to keep her quiet."
Margaret tried to adopt her old aristocratic, posture again.
She smoothed down her cream silk blouse with shaking hands.
"You won't call the police on us, Daniel," Margaret.
"It would ruin our family name in this city."
"The news media would destroy our corporate stock value."
"You care too much about the Carter family legacy."
I looked at my mother with total, absolute coldness.
