Chapter 6 - Calling the Authorities
I reached into my navy suit jacket for my phone.
Margaret's eyes bulged in pure, unadulterated terror now.
She lunged across the mahogany desk to grab phone.
I easily stepped back, keeping the phone out reach.
"Daniel, stop! Think about your unborn baby!" Margaret.
"What will people say when your mother is arrested?"
"They will say justice was finally delivered," I answered.
I tapped three emergency numbers on my phone keypad.
I brought the sleek device up to my right ear.
"Nine one one, what is your emergency location?"
"My name is Daniel Carter at four twelve Elm."
"I am reporting a major corporate embezzlement and fraud."
"The suspects are currently inside my private residence now."
"Send police units and financial crime investigators immediately."
Lucas panicked, running straight toward the study door exit.
He tried to flee the house before police arrived.
I stepped into his path, grabbing his casual shirt.
I twisted his collar and shoved him back inside.
He stumbled onto the Persian rug, falling to knees.
"You are not going anywhere, Lucas," I said.
"You are going to sit right there until handcuffs click."
Margaret collapsed onto the leather sofa, weeping tears.
"You are an evil, ungrateful son, Daniel!" she.
"I gave you life! I gave you this estate!"
"You gave me nothing but lies and abuse, Margaret."
Elena stood up slowly from her armchair, holding side.
She walked over to my side, gripping my hand.
"Are you okay, Elena?" I asked, looking down.
"My stomach is cramping very hard, Daniel," she.
Her face was ghost white, sweat covering her forehead.
My heart stopped beating for a fraction of second.
The intense stress of the day was affecting her.
She was entering premature labor at eight months pregnant.
I immediately spoke into the phone line again fast.
"Dispatcher, send an emergency ambulance to this address!"
"My eight-month pregnant wife is in severe physical distress!"
