Chapter 2 - Choosing My Family

I lifted Elena gently to her feet on marble.

Her light beige maternity dress was damp around the knees.

She leaned against my chest, shivering from severe nervous shock.

My mother Margaret let out a bitter, mocking, sharp laugh.

She adjusted her cream silk sleeves with total arrogant poise.

Lucas slowly lowered his smartphone completely to his denim jeans.

His confident, smug smile began to fade away very quickly.

He saw the lethal, unyielding fury burning inside my eyes.

"You are choosing her over your own family?" Margaret asked.

Her shrill voice echoed off the high crystal chandelier ceiling.

"You are choosing this penniless girl over your own mother?"

I wrapped my right arm securely around my wife's waist.

I shielded her fragile body with my broad suit frame.

I looked directly into my mother's icy blue eyes.

My face remained granite cold and completely unwavering under light.

"I am choosing my family," I stated very clearly.

"Elena and our unborn child are my real family now."

Margaret's face flushed a deep, angry, bitter red color.

She stood up abruptly from her carved wooden chair.

"I raised you in this luxury mansion, Daniel Carter!"

"I built our corporate family name from nothing at all!"

"And you disrespect me for this pathetic, weeping girl?"

Elena clutched my navy suit lapels with shaking fingers.

"Daniel, please do not fight with them," Elena whispered.

"I don't want you caught in the middle forever."

"You are not the problem here, sweetheart," I replied.

I wiped a warm tear from her pale, soft cheek.

Lucas took a step backward toward the grand piano corner.

He tried to slip his smartphone into his jeans pocket.

"Delete that video footage right now, Lucas," I ordered.

My voice carried a low, dangerous threat of immediate violence.

Lucas swallowed hard, his throat moving nervously in light.

"I was just taking a family home video, Daniel."

"Delete it before I break that phone in half," I growled.

Lucas quickly tapped his screen, deleting the file fast.

He knew I was not making an empty threat today.

I picked up my leather briefcase from the marble floor.
