Chapter 12 - THE PORCH TEST

The trust archive contained photographs of my mansion porch.
Measurements.
Camera angles.
Weather patterns.
Even the weak point in the front door.
Clara’s escape route had been designed.
Dominic was instructed to drive her toward the Sterling house during a storm.
I was expected to catch her.
Lock the door.
Open the safe.
Remove the envelope.
Every action matched the trust’s succession ritual.
The unidentified man’s calls were part of the test too.
Different male voices could be used to create urgency.
The system wanted to know whether I would preserve documents or protect Clara.
I chose Clara.
But by retrieving the envelope, I still activated the archive.
Then Clara made the choice the system did not expect.
She refused the matriarch role.
She signed no transfer.
She claimed no children as assets.
She asked courts to divide the records among independent advocates.
No single Sterling would control them.
The archive began locking itself.
Then Dominic returned to the mansion.
Not secretly.
