Chapter 13 - THE SON AT THE DOOR

Dominic’s attorneys produced my original birth record for him.

I was listed as mother.

Nathan as father.

The Sterling mansion had passed through my late husband’s estate, but the hidden family agreement granted residence rights to any unacknowledged child of the matriarch.

Dominic entered legally.

For one hour.

He smiled as though the law had vindicated him.

Then Clara’s full medical records arrived.

Bruises.

Threats.

Forced procedures.

The porch messages.

The damaged door.

The illegal embryo transfer.

A protective order removed him.

But before officers escorted him out, he looked at the sealed envelope on the desk.

“You still haven’t opened the final compartment.”

There was a compartment inside the envelope lining.

Forensics opened it.

A memory card.

The original porch footage.

Not the night Clara arrived.

A night thirty-two years earlier.

I stood on the porch, pregnant and bleeding.

My mother caught me.

A man pounded on the door.

Nathan.

I had escaped him too.

The trust ritual had already happened to me.

My memory had been chemically suppressed after Dominic’s birth.

My life with Richard began after they erased the man who hurt me.

The family had not merely hidden Dominic.

They had hidden my trauma.

Then the footage showed someone else.

A young Clara standing inside the mansion.

Impossible.

She had not been born yet.
