Chapter 2 - THE SIGNATURE

The envelope vibrated because someone had hidden a phone-thin tracker inside the cardboard lining.
I did not open it.
Instead, I placed it inside a metal document case and closed the lid.
The vibration stopped.
Dominic’s voice came through the damaged door.
“You can’t hide it forever.”
Police sirens sounded in the distance.
His dark SUV backed away from the gate before the first patrol car reached the street.
He never appeared on camera.
He never gave officers a face to identify.
But the damage to the door, Clara’s injuries, the messages, and my emergency call created a record he could not immediately control.
Paramedics examined Clara in the mansion.
Her baby’s heartbeat remained strong, but she had bruised ribs, dehydration, and signs of prolonged stress.
At the hospital, she was placed under a protected name.
I brought the sealed envelope to attorney Evelyn Shaw.
She opened it in the presence of police and a forensic technician.
Inside were marriage documents, fertility consents, and a trust transfer signed by Clara.
Her signature looked real.
The date was the night of her wedding.
Clara remembered signing a stack of papers Dominic said were insurance forms.
One page authorized “future reproductive and hereditary asset management.”
The language buried a guardianship clause.
If Clara became medically or psychologically impaired, Dominic would control any unborn child linked to the Sterling family trust.
He had spent the marriage creating evidence that she was unstable.
Doctor visits he answered for her.
Messages he deleted.
Arguments he secretly recorded.
Bruises he called accidents.
Then the envelope revealed a second signature.
Mine.
Victoria Sterling.
I had never signed it.
Someone forged my authorization to transfer the trust’s maternal line through Clara’s child.
The notary was a man named Nathan Ward.
Dominic’s dead father.
Then Evelyn found a hidden page.
The child was not listed as Dominic’s biological heir.
The paternal line named:
NATHAN WARD.
Clara stared at the paper.
“No.”
Independent testing was ordered.
Before the results returned, the hospital received a court order demanding Clara’s transfer to a private maternity facility.
The judge’s signature was genuine.
The order had been filed two weeks before the porch attack.
Dominic had expected her to run home.
He wanted her frightened enough to seek me.
The entire escape may have been part of his plan.
Then my phone displayed a new message.
