Chapter 1 - The Bruise Under Valerie’s Shirt

The kitchen door hit the stopper behind me, and for a second I thought I had walked into the wrong house.
Valerie was on her knees beside the refrigerator.
My seven-year-old daughter had Mateo pressed against her chest with one arm while she wiped spilled milk from the floor with the other.
Mateo was screaming.
Valerie looked too tired to cry.
Rex stopped beside me and lowered his head.
“Daddy…”
Her voice cracked.
“My back hurts so much.”
I dropped my military backpack.
“Valerie.”
I crossed the kitchen and took Mateo from her.
She immediately reached for the rag again.
“Leave it.”
“I have to finish.”
“No, you don’t.”
Her hand kept moving.
I caught her wrist gently.
“Valerie. Look at me.”
She finally did.
There were dark circles beneath her eyes.
“What happened?”
She pulled the collar of her oversized T-shirt sideways.
A dark bruise covered the top of her shoulder.
My breathing changed.
“Who did this to you?”
She stared at the floor.
“Claire said I had to finish it.”
Claire Morgan had been living in my house for almost five months.
She was my girlfriend.
More importantly, she had been the person I trusted to help with Valerie and six-month-old Mateo while I was deployed on a three-week emergency-response assignment in Florida after hurricane damage.
I had returned six hours early.
Claire’s car was gone.
The children were alone.
I helped Valerie stand and moved both kids behind me.
Then I saw the camera mounted high in the corner.
I had installed it two years earlier after a break-in next door.
Claire knew it existed.
At least I thought she did.
“Did she hurt you?”
Valerie nodded once.
“Dad…”
“What?”
“Don’t let her come back.”
I opened the laptop on the counter.
The security application was already logged in.
I selected the kitchen camera.
Valerie stood behind me holding Mateo.
Rex pressed against her leg.
The video began.
I watched twenty seconds.
Then thirty.
My hand tightened beside the laptop.
Claire hadn’t simply lost her temper once.
The footage showed something that had apparently been happening for days.

And the first thing that frightened me was not what Claire was doing.
It was how practiced Valerie looked while obeying her.
