Claire had been planning to start a small in-home care company.
No office yet.
No employees.
No licensing completed.
Just an idea.
She needed startup money.
She told Michelle that once she and I were “financially combined,” she could access enough capital to launch.
I had never agreed.
She interpreted my relationship, my house, and my income as future resources she was entitled to use.
The yellow-house shifts served two purposes.
Cash.
And a potential client reference.
That explained why she kept leaving even after realizing caring for both children alone was too much.
She wasn’t trapped.
She was pursuing something.
Valerie and Mateo became obstacles.
The emotional damage from that realization was worse than if Claire had simply hated children.
She had wanted a family.
She had wanted my family.
But mainly as proof that she had arrived at the stable life she imagined.
When actual children required patience, sacrifice, and unpredictability, resentment replaced affection.
Rachel said something I didn’t want to hear.
“You wanted this to work too.”
“Yes.”
“You moved her in fast.”
Five months after we began dating seriously.
Too fast.
I had been lonely.
Lauren had been dead five years, but loneliness does not follow calendars.
Claire was capable.
Organized.
Warm with Mateo when I was present.
She made dinner.
Helped Valerie with homework.
Made the house feel less empty.
I wanted to believe competence was character.
That was my mistake.
Then Claire’s attorney proposed a resolution on the financial issue.
Claire would admit initiating the credit inquiry but claimed she never intended to complete anything without my consent.
My lawyer advised me not to respond emotionally.
The investigation would determine what could be proven.
Truth alone would not automatically create every consequence I wanted.
And I realized I didn’t actually know what I wanted.
Punishment?
Repayment?
