Chapter 10 - Michelle Had Seen Valerie Working
Michelle agreed to another interview.
This time she stopped protecting Claire.
She admitted visiting my house twice while I was away.
Both times, Valerie was there.
That contradicted her earlier claim.
“Why did you lie to me?”
Michelle looked ashamed.
“Claire told me you’d blame me too.”
“For what?”
“She said you made Valerie do chores because you believed military discipline was good for kids.”
I stared at her.
Claire had been building an explanation before anyone challenged her.
Michelle said Valerie was cleaning during both visits.
She assumed I approved because Claire said it was part of my parenting.
Then came the major twist.
Claire had not invented the entire idea alone.
Months earlier, I had made a careless comment during dinner.
Valerie complained about cleaning her room.
I joked that my father would have had me scrubbing floors at her age.
Claire laughed and said:
“Maybe she needs military school.”
I said:
“A few chores won’t kill her.”
Claire later repeated that sentence to Michelle as though it were permission.
She also used it whenever Valerie protested.
Your dad says chores won’t kill you.
Three earlier details changed meaning.
Valerie’s compulsive need to finish cleaning wasn’t only fear of Claire.
Claire had attached my authority to the punishment.
Her statement that I “hated coming home to messes” came from exaggerating my preference for an orderly house.
And Michelle’s willingness to ignore what she saw came from believing I had approved a harsh parenting system.
Claire had used fragments of my own words to legitimize behavior I never authorized.
That did not make me responsible for her abuse.
But it forced me to confront something painful.
I had given Claire authority over my children without defining clear boundaries because I assumed any reasonable adult would know them.
Claire filled that ambiguity with whatever benefited her.
Then Michelle revealed the final piece.
The unfinished home-equity application wasn’t meant to put Claire on the deed.
Claire intended to use the borrowed money for something else.
