Chapter 6 - Michelle Told Me Why Claire Needed Cash
Michelle contacted me herself.
Not because I tracked her down.
Claire gave her my number.
That decision would cost Claire more than she realized.
Michelle sounded nervous.
“I think she told you I borrowed money.”
“She didn’t tell me anything clearly.”
“Okay.”
A pause.
“Then I need to start earlier.”
Claire had been paying part of Michelle’s rent for four months.
Not because Michelle was simply broke.
Because Claire had been living there intermittently.
I said nothing.
Michelle continued.
“Whenever you were gone overnight, she stayed here sometimes.”
“What about my kids?”
“I thought they were with your sister.”
Rachel was sitting across from me.
She shook her head.
“They weren’t.”
Michelle went quiet.
“Oh my God.”
The arrangement had started before my Florida assignment.
Claire told Michelle she needed space because my house was “chaotic.”
She paid $700 monthly toward the apartment so she could use the spare bedroom whenever she wanted.
That explained the payment.
It also explained something else.
Claire had been treating my home as employment.
Not family.
Michelle repeated a phrase Claire used often.
“Daniel expects me to be a free nanny.”
I had never called Claire a nanny.
I never asked her to quit work.
When we discussed my deployment, I offered to hire daytime childcare.
Claire refused.
She said having someone unfamiliar in the house would stress Mateo.
She told me she wanted to handle it.
Why?
Michelle answered without knowing she was answering.
“Claire said if she showed you she could handle the kids, you’d finally put her on the house.”
I stared at Rachel.
“What?”
Michelle sounded confused.
“She told me you were planning to add her to the deed.”
I had never said that.
Claire and I weren’t engaged.
We had never discussed joint ownership.
Then Michelle added:
“She also said once you saw how dependent you were on her, you’d stop acting like the house was only yours.”
There it was.
The hidden truth beginning to surface.
Claire wasn’t simply overwhelmed by childcare.

When that permanence didn’t arrive quickly enough, she started resenting the children she believed were supposed to prove her value.
