Chapter 11 - THE HOUSE SETTLEMENT

The property case could have gone through trial.

Instead, after discovery, the parties mediated.

Title itself was no longer seriously disputed.

Mom and I owned the house fifty-fifty.

The loan lien was limited and restructured through negotiation because my purported consent was invalid and Mom’s interest had been misrepresented in material ways.

The lender had its own claims against parties who supplied false documents.

Nobody simply erased a bank’s rights because my family behaved badly.

Settlement took work.

Insurance claims.

Restitution.

Sale of some Vanessa assets.

Brandon’s contribution.

The remaining legitimate property debt was refinanced against Mom’s lawful share under court-approved terms with safeguards.

I contributed funds too.

Not because I owed Vanessa.

Because preserving Mom’s housing mattered to me and the numbers made sense.

Vanessa surrendered any claim she informally asserted to ownership.

There had never been a valid deed to her.

Mom’s power of attorney was revoked.

A professional fiduciary helped with larger financial decisions during the transition.

Not because Mom was incompetent.

Because after betrayal, independent administration reduced pressure.
