Chapter 4 - BRANDON’S VERSION

Brandon asked to speak with me.
Not Vanessa.
He had moved into a hotel after she threw a lamp at the wall during an argument about police statements.
I agreed to meet in Melissa’s office.
He looked exhausted.
“I didn’t know everything.”
“That sentence is doing a lot of work.”
“I notarized your signature.”
“Yes.”
He closed his eyes.
“Vanessa told me you had signed electronically.”
“Then why notarize me as physically present?”
Silence.
Exactly.
He had known formalities were false.
Maybe not the entire financial scheme.
Enough.
“Did you copy my signature?”
“No.”
“Who did?”
“Vanessa.”
There it was.
He said she used a scanned signature from an old family trust acknowledgment.
He told her they should get actual consent.
She said I did not care about the property.
“Did you believe her?”
“At first.”
“And later?”
He looked down.
“No.”
“Then why continue?”
“Because the bank was about to deny the loan.”
That simple.
Not an evil master plan.
Financial desperation plus cowardice.
Vanessa needed money.
Brandon wanted to preserve the marriage.
Instead of stopping her, he helped create a false document.
“What was the money for?”
“Business debt.”
“How much?”
“More than you know.”
Of course.
Bennett House Interiors owed vendors.
Credit cards.
A commercial landlord.
Tax liabilities.
The $158,000 transfer did not save it.
It delayed failure.
Then Vanessa wanted another $350,000.
Brandon objected.
That was why their marriage had become explosive.
He had finally said no.
Too late.
But it explained why the second loan remained pending.
I asked:
“Did you know she was treating Mom like this?”
He swallowed.
“I thought Helen wanted to help.”
“You watched Vanessa slap her.”
“Yes.”
“And?”
“I froze.”
“That’s not enough.”
“I know.”
He looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I did not forgive him.
Not then.
Maybe not ever.
But his cooperation mattered.
He gave investigators access to original digital files.
Messages.
Loan drafts.
Bank emails.
One text from Vanessa:
Mom is useless with money now. We decide.
Another:
Claire signed years ago. She can’t come back whining now.
Brandon replied:
She didn’t sign that paper in front of me.
Vanessa:
Who cares? She agrees in principle.
That message was devastating.
May you like
Because it showed Brandon knew.
And Vanessa knew he knew.
