Chapter 14 - VANESSA CAME BACK TO THE KITCHEN

Four years passed before Mom agreed to see Vanessa privately.
Therapist present.
I remained nearby but not in the room.
Later Mom told me what happened.
Vanessa apologized for the slap first.
Then for the money.
Then for making Mom feel like she had to work to stay in her own house.
Mom asked:
“Did you know I owned half?”
Vanessa said:
“Yes.”
“From when?”
“Before I moved in.”
That hurt Mom deeply.
Because it removed the last illusion.
Vanessa had known.
Not every detail.
Enough.
Mom asked:
“Then why did you tell me Claire gave hers up?”
Vanessa cried.
“Because if you remembered you had choices, you might tell me no.”
There it was.
Control requires narrowing someone’s perceived options.
Mom did not hug her.
She said:
“I forgive some of what happened.”
Not all.
Vanessa nodded.

That was a mature answer.
Forgiveness did not need to be binary.
