Chapter 13 - MOM LEARNED TO OWN THINGS AGAIN

Mom moved back into the house.
Not immediately.
She stayed with me six months.
Then one afternoon she said:
“I want my bedroom.”
I smiled.
“Your old one?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa had taken the upstairs primary suite.
Mom had been moved downstairs.
We renovated the upstairs bathroom slightly to make it safer.
Grab bars.
Better lighting.
No humiliating “senior” aesthetic.
Mom chose blue paint.
Hated my suggestion of gray.
Her house.
Her half.
Her choice.
She also started opening her own mail again.
At first, every bank envelope frightened her.
We worked through it.
Not by taking over.
By sitting beside her while she read.
