Chapter 5 - The Desperate Texts

My mobile phone began buzzing continuously on my desk.
Vibrations rattled against the polished mahogany wood surface hard.
An incoming call from my sister Vanessa flashed bright.
I declined the call with a single thumb swipe.
Two seconds later, my mother Linda called my line.
I declined her call without a moment of hesitation.
Then the flood of frantic text messages began arriving.
Vanessa: "Claire! Why did my card just decline?"
Vanessa: "I am standing at the register right now!"
Vanessa: "Unlock the card immediately! This is embarrassing!"
Linda: "Claire Morgan, answer your phone right now!"
Linda: "Your sister is being humiliated at the store!"
Linda: "How dare you turn off the cards today!"
Linda: "You turn those accounts back on this instant!"
I watched the messages scroll past on the display.
Their arrogance was truly mind-boggling and utterly toxic.
They felt zero guilt for throwing hot coffee today.
They felt zero remorse for stealing my credit card.
They were furious because their stolen money was stopped.
They felt entitled to my income, status, and life.
I picked up my phone, opening the camera lens.
I took a high-resolution photo of my burned face.
The red, blistered skin was clearly visible under light.
I attached the photo to a single text reply.
I sent the photo directly to the family group.
I added one quiet, chilling sentence beneath the image:
"Actions leave records. Every single one."
I locked my screen and set phone face down.
I stood up from my desk, walking to window.
The city streets below hummed with daily morning traffic.
The family war was officially declared in open light.
