Chapter 8 - The Father's Plea

At two o'clock that afternoon, my desk phone rang.

The caller ID displayed my father Robert's cell number.

I answered the call, placing it on speaker phone.

"Claire... please tell me you haven't called police."

Robert's voice came through weak, pathetic, and trembling.

"I haven't filed the police report yet, Dad."

Robert let out a long, ragged breath of relief.

"Thank God. Listen to me, my sweet daughter."

"Your mother and sister made a terrible mistake today."

"Vanessa was stressed about her business opening costs."

"Your mother was just trying to keep peace family."

"I am ready to write you a check today."

"I will pay you back the eighty-five thousand."

"Just unlock their cards and drop this whole matter."

I sat back in my leather executive chair quietly.

"Where will you get eighty-five thousand dollars, Dad?"

Robert hesitated on the line for three long seconds.

"I will take a loan against our family house."

My eyes narrowed as I caught the lie fast.

"The house is already mortgaged to the hilt, Dad."

"You don't have eighty-five thousand dollars in bank."

Robert's voice cracked with deep, sudden, desperate fear.

"Claire... if you press criminal charges against them,"

"The bank will foreclose on our residential property."

"Your mother used the home equity as collateral store."

"We will lose the house, Claire! We'll be!"

My blood ran cold as realization struck my mind.

My father wasn't an innocent, passive bystander at all.

He knew about the fraudulent home equity loans all along.

He allowed Linda and Vanessa to steal my identity.

To cover up his own failed real estate investments.
