Chapter 9 - The Forged Trust

"You knew about the home equity loans, Dad?"
Robert remained completely silent on the open phone line.
His silence was a full, undeniable, clear confession today.
"You let them steal my credit card to pay,"
"Because the bank was foreclosing on the mansion today!"
"Claire, please! We are your parents!" Robert wept.
"We raised you! We gave you a good home!"
"You sacrificed my identity to cover your debts, Robert."
I tapped my secondary laptop screen to check records.
I opened my late grandmother's estate trust file database.
My grandmother left a two-million-dollar property trust behind.
The trust was set aside for my future inheritance.
My eyes scanned the recent digital property transfer filings.
A forged signature appeared on the master property deed.
My legal signature had been signed three weeks ago.
My mother Linda had notarized the signature herself personally.
They had mortgaged my late grandmother's estate trust completely.
They extracted one million dollars in cash from trust.
They used my name to secure the predatory loan.
Pure, paralyzing, freezing rage flooded my entire body.
They hadn't just stolen eighty-five thousand on credit.
They had stolen my entire two-million-dollar inheritance trust.
They committed identity theft, forgery, and grand wire fraud.
"You signed my name on Grandmother's trust, Robert."
My voice dropped into a low, terrifyingly calm register.
Robert gasped softly on the phone, dropping his receiver.
"Claire... no... let me explain that paper!"
"Do not call this phone ever again, Robert."
I disconnected the call, slamming the receiver down hard.
I picked up my mobile phone, dialing my lawyer.
"Mr. Miller, prepare the criminal fraud evidence files."
