Chapter 10 - VERONICA’S CHOICE
My sister arrived at my door at 11:40 p.m.
No makeup.
No handbag.
No Derek.
She looked at me.
“I’m sorry.”
I did not hug her.
Not immediately.
“For what?”
Her eyes filled.
“For hitting you.”
I waited.
“For calling Khloe a liar without saying the word.”
Closer.
“For choosing him before I even knew what happened.”
There it was.
I stepped aside.
She came in.
We sat on the floor outside Khloe’s bedroom because Veronica wanted to see her.
I said no.
“She’s asleep.”
“I just want—”
“No.”
For once, Veronica accepted a boundary.
We talked until two.
She had ended the relationship.
Not because I ordered her.
Because Derek finally admitted enough.
He had crushed portions of Robert’s older medication and put small amounts into drinks on several occasions.
His intention, according to what he told Veronica, was to make Robert fatigued and mentally foggy during conversations about the $48,000.
He wanted time.
He wanted Robert doubting himself.
He wanted to persuade him to sign the revised agreement.
He claimed he never intended serious harm.
That did not make it safe.
Medication affects people unpredictably.
Robert could have fallen.
Driven.
Combined it with other medications.
Derek had gambled with his health to conceal financial lies.
And when Khloe saw him, he threatened a six-year-old.
