Chapter 14 - THE PARTY WE ALMOST CANCELED

Three years after the BBQ, Robert turned sixty-nine.
Helen wanted dinner.
Robert said:
“No party.”
Khloe overheard.
“Why?”
He smiled awkwardly.
“Grandpa’s getting old.”
“That’s not why.”
Children.
Robert looked at me.
I let him answer.
“Because the last big party wasn’t very good.”
Khloe shrugged.
“So have a better one.”
We did.
Small.
No performance.
No pretending everything had healed perfectly.
Veronica came.
Her relationship with me had taken years to rebuild.
She never demanded that Khloe call her Aunt Veronica again immediately.
She waited.
Eventually Khloe did.
Robert no longer treated uncomfortable conversations as attacks on family dignity.
Helen stopped smoothing over conflict before understanding it.
And I stopped assuming protection meant exploding first and thinking second.
Near the grill, Robert handed me the tongs.
“No.”
He laughed.
“Still traumatized by my burgers?”
“Absolutely.”
Khloe ran past us.
No towel.
No fear.
Just grass stains on both knees.
Then she stopped in front of Robert.
“Grandpa?”
“Yes?”
“Can I have two cupcakes?”
“One.”
“Mom said two.”
He looked at me.
I held up two fingers.
Robert sighed.
“Your mother has destroyed discipline.”
Khloe grinned.
Ordinary family teasing.
May you like
No cruelty hidden inside it.
That distinction had taken us years to learn.
