Chapter 11 - Henry Cole Took Off the Mask

I did not bring the original ledger.
I photographed every page.
Encrypted copies went to three cloud accounts.
One to Julia.
One to Samuel.
One to myself.
Then I placed a photocopied version inside the leather cover.
If Henry knew the difference, he knew more about the ledger than he admitted.
Claudia wanted to come.
"No."
"Mark is there."
"Exactly."
"He's my son."
"Then stay with his son."
She looked toward Ethan.
That stopped her.
Maria stayed too.
Elaine and Samuel came with me because both knew Lake Briar better than I did.
We arrived at 11:31 P.M.
Twenty-nine minutes until Mark's supposed default.
The main house lights were on.
The front door stood open.
Henry was in my father's study.
A pistol in his hand.
Mark sat against the wall.
Blood on his lip.
David sat opposite him, holding a towel against his shoulder.
No one seemed dead.
Good.
Henry pointed at the bag.
"Ledger."
"Mark first."
"Richard."
"Mark walks to me."
Henry laughed.
"You still think this is a negotiation."
"I think you need what's in this bag."
That worked.
"Mark."
My son stood slowly.
Henry didn't stop him.
Mark came toward me.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah."
His eyes moved to Elaine.
"Who is she?"
"Later."
David laughed weakly.
"This family loves that word."
I looked at him.
"You engineered Mark's debt."
"No."
"Henry did."
"Yes."
"Did you know?"
"Eventually."
"When?"
"After the second loan payment."
"And you kept using him."
David's expression hardened.
"Your family used mine for thirty-seven years."
"So you abused someone who shared your father?"
He looked at Mark.
Something changed in his face.
"That wasn't the plan."
"Everyone says that after the damage."
Henry pointed the gun.
"Enough."
I threw the fake ledger onto the desk.
He opened it.
His face changed.
"You copied it."
"Of course."
"You think digital copies help?"
"They help everyone see what you're afraid of."
He stared at me.
"What am I afraid of?"
"That the system you inherited proves you're not a protector."
His jaw tightened.
"You're a thief."
He laughed.
"Your father stole first."
"And you had thirty years to decide what kind of man you wanted to be."
Silence.
"Instead, you forged my signature, manipulated Mark's debt, threatened Maria, staged Ethan's neglect, and helped Claudia copy my signature."
Henry's hand tightened around the gun.
"I kept this family from collapsing."
"No."
"You have no idea what George left behind."
"Then tell me."
"The Kline properties were contaminated."
"Financially?"
"Legally."
"Meaning?"
"Half the early assets were purchased with money David Senior couldn't explain."
David sat straighter.
"What?"
Henry looked at him.
"Your father wasn't innocent."
David's face changed.
"What money?"
"Private investors."
"Names."
"That's what everyone has been hunting."
I looked at Samuel.
He nodded slowly.
There was another layer.
Not Whitaker versus Kline.
Both may have been using money belonging to someone else.
Henry continued:
"George discovered it after David disappeared."
"Then why hide it?"
"Because admitting it would have destroyed every project."
"So he stole David's half and buried the source."
"Yes."
"And Thomas?"
"My father tried to trace the investors."
"Did he?"
Henry's expression changed.
"He found one."
"Who?"
"He never told me."
"Then what are you trying to protect?"
"The ledger."
I almost laughed.
"We already copied it."
"Not that ledger."
Samuel whispered:
"The second ledger."
Henry looked at him.
There.
Confirmation.
"What second ledger?"
Samuel's face tightened.
"The investor ledger."
"Where?"
He looked toward the floor.
"Under the boathouse."
David stood despite his injury.
"That's what Natalie found."
Henry pointed the gun at him.
"Sit down."
David didn't.
Henry shouted:
"SIT DOWN!"
Mark stepped between them.
"Stop."
Henry's face twisted.
"You think David is your brother now?"
Mark looked at him.
"He is."
"You hated him thirty minutes ago."
"I still might."
David almost smiled despite everything.
"But you're the one holding the gun."
Power shifted.
Not fully.
Enough.
I stepped forward.
"Who ordered Natalie's car modification?"
Henry's eyes flickered.
"I didn't."
"David?"
"No."
"Claudia?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Silence.
"Henry."
His voice dropped.
"The instruction came through North Cross."
"Which you controlled."
"After Natalie died."
The work order happened before her death.
He was telling the truth.
"Who controlled North Cross then?"
We knew Natalie was supposed to.
But maybe someone else had hijacked it.
Henry whispered:
"Julia."
I stared.
"No."
"She received the emergency credentials three days before the crash."
Elaine shook her head.
"Natalie transferred them."
"Exactly."
"To protect the system."
"Or use it."
I looked at Henry.
"You have proof?"
"No."
"Then stop."
He laughed bitterly.
"You defend everyone until evidence forces you not to."
Maybe.
But I was done condemning people based on people with guns.
A sound came from outside.
Vehicle.
Henry turned toward the window.
That was his mistake.
David moved.
He knocked Henry's gun arm aside.
The shot struck the ceiling.
Mark tackled Henry.
I kicked the pistol away.
Samuel grabbed it.
For several seconds, bodies crashed against furniture.
Then Henry was on the floor.
Mark held him down.
David leaned against the desk, bleeding again.
No one looked victorious.
I took Henry's phone.
Unlocked.
A message had arrived.
UNKNOWN:
11:45. IS RICHARD AT THE HOUSE?
I stared.
Someone else still directing him.
I typed:
YES.
Immediate reply.
GOOD. KEEP HIM THERE UNTIL MIDNIGHT.
My pulse jumped.
"Why do they need me here until midnight?"
Henry's face went white.
"What?"
I showed him.
His fear looked real.
"I didn't know."
"What happens at midnight?"
Samuel whispered:
"Lake Briar transfer."
I turned.
"What transfer?"
He looked toward Ethan's trust documents in my mind.
"The property."
"To whom?"
"Whoever controls the Kline Continuity Trust at midnight."
My stomach dropped.
"Who controls it?"
Henry said nothing.
David whispered:
"Ethan."
No.
Ethan was beneficiary.
Not controller.
Then Henry's phone buzzed again.
A document arrived.
EMERGENCY GUARDIAN APPOINTMENT.
Minor:
Ethan Whitaker.
Proposed guardian:
CLAUDIA WHITAKER.
Already electronically signed.
By Claudia.
I stared.
She had signed something while we were gone.
If approved, Claudia could act for Ethan.
And if Ethan became controller of Lake Briar at midnight...
Claudia would control him.
I called home.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Mark's face collapsed.
"Mom."
May you like
We ran.
