Chapter 14 - Elaine Was Never Running from Them

I called David at Lake Briar.

"Where is Elaine?"

Silence.

"David."

"She left."

My stomach tightened.

"When?"

"Ten minutes ago."

"Did she take anything?"

Another pause.

"The original ledger."

I closed my eyes.

Of course.

"Find her."

"Richard—"

"FIND HER."

I ended the call.

Claudia was shaking.

"No."

I looked at her.

"How long has Elaine advised you financially?"

"Years."

"How many?"

"Twenty."

Samuel whispered:

"Longer."

Claudia turned.

"What?"

"Elaine worked for Thomas Cole before she moved west."

"I know that now."

"No."

Samuel shook his head.

"She returned secretly."

"When?"

"After George died."

My pulse shifted.

"She took over pieces of the family-office system."

Henry stared.

"You knew?"

"I suspected."

Everyone suspected.

Nobody told anyone.

That was how this machinery survived.

"What did Elaine want?"

Samuel answered:

"Restitution."

"For the Klines?"

"At first."

"And later?"

"Control."

Simple.

Believable.

Power changed motives.

Elaine began as someone trying to reclaim what George stole.

Then discovered the network of shell companies, family trusts, and hidden properties could control hundreds of millions.

Why destroy the machine when you could own it?

I thought of David.

Mark.

Henry.

Claudia.

All manipulated through old shame.

Elaine knew every vulnerability because she was family to half the people involved.

"Did she recruit David?"

Samuel nodded.

"Indirectly."

"Create Mark's debt?"

"Through North Cross."

"Use Henry?"

"By threatening to expose Thomas Cole."

"Claudia?"

Samuel looked at her.

Claudia whispered:

"She kept telling me Richard was preparing to remove me from the house."

My anger flashed.

"You believed her."

"She showed me documents."

"Forged documents."

"I know that now."

"And Ethan?"

Tears filled her eyes.

"She said if he learned the house belonged to him, Mark would lose everything."

"So you punished him for owning something he didn't understand."

Claudia covered her face.

No excuse.

But now I understood the poison.

Elaine had told her a child threatened her status.

Claudia supplied the cruelty herself.

I called Julia.

"Find Elaine."

"I'm already searching."

"Check Lake Briar traffic cameras."

"Working."

Then:

"Richard."

"What?"

"Cedar North transfer began early."

My stomach dropped.

"It's not midnight."

"Someone manually triggered it."

"Elaine."

"Probably."

"Can you stop it?"

"No."

"Who is acting trustee?"

Julia hesitated.

"Still Mark."

Mark stood.

"I didn't sign anything."

"We know."

"Can I resign?"

Julia paused.

"Maybe."

"Do it."

"Mark, if you resign without replacement, emergency control may go to the next named guardian."

Claudia.

Worse.

"Who else qualifies?"

"Richard, if his competence remains unchallenged."

I laughed.

The board petition still existed.

"What do you need?"

Julia said:

"One verified signature in person."

Finally.

Not digital.

Not copied.

A real human hand.

"Where?"

"Whitaker Development."

We drove there.

All of us.

Richard.

Mark.

Claudia.

Samuel.

Henry under security.

No one stayed behind except Maria with Ethan.

I hated leaving him.

But this was how I kept him safe.

At the executive conference room, Julia had documents waiting.

Mark signed a renunciation of unauthorized trustee status.

I signed acceptance as emergency independent trustee.

Claudia signed a statement disputing every guardianship document issued under her name after six that evening.

Henry witnessed.

Samuel witnessed.

For once, everyone knew what they were signing.

Julia submitted them.

System processing.

Thirty seconds.

Sixty.

Then:

TRUSTEE STATUS: RICHARD WHITAKER.

I exhaled.

Not victory.

One locked door.

Julia looked at me.

"Cedar North transferred."

"To Ethan?"

"Yes."

"Control?"

"You."

Relief.

Then the conference room doors opened.

David entered.

Alone.

Empty-handed.

Mark stood.

"Where's Elaine?"

"Gone."

"With the ledger?"

"Yes."

David looked at Claudia.

"She called me."

My pulse shifted.

"What did she say?"

"That she's done fixing George Whitaker's mistakes for people who never appreciated her."

Samuel whispered:

"She's unraveling."

David shook his head.

"No."

"Then?"

"She's leaving."

"With what?"

"The investor ledger."

The second ledger.

The one under Lake Briar's boathouse.

Samuel stood.

"She found it?"

David nodded.

"Before any of us."

My stomach dropped.

The ledger that identified the original mystery investors whose money helped build the empire.

"What does she want?"

"To sell it."

"To whom?"

David looked at me.

"Whoever has the most to lose."

That could be dozens of families.

Companies.

Politicians.

Dead men's heirs.

The conspiracy widened.

But Ethan remained my priority.

My phone rang.

Maria.

I answered immediately.

"Richard."

Her voice shook.

"What happened?"

"Ethan is fine."

Relief.

"But someone is at the house."

"Who?"

"A woman."

My heart changed.

"Elaine?"

"No."

"Do you know her?"

"No."

Then Ethan's voice sounded in the background.

Excited.

Not frightened.

"Mommy!"

Every person in the conference room froze.

Mark grabbed my arm.

"What did he say?"

Maria whispered:

"Richard... he ran to her."

Mark went white.

I put the call on speaker.

A woman's voice came through.

Soft.

Familiar.

Impossible.

"Richard?"

Mark stopped breathing.

Claudia covered her mouth.

I knew the voice.

Natalie.

Alive.

"Where have you been?"

A long silence.

Then:

"Trying to get home before Elaine found Ethan."

My pulse slammed.

"Stay there."

"Richard, listen to me first."

"What?"

"Do not bring Samuel Pierce."

Samuel went still.

"Why?"

Natalie's voice changed.

"Because Samuel is the person who told Elaine where the investor ledger was hidden."

Every eye turned toward the old man.

He stepped backward.

"No."

Natalie continued:

"And Richard..."

"What?"

"Samuel didn't help me investigate David Senior's disappearance."

A pause.

May you like

"He helped cause it."
